tamiya mech recoil
« on: April 21, 2020, 03:33:48 PM »
Hi all,

Hoping to get some advisement on an problem im having difficulty solving. Searched the forum but havent found any info to solve. I have a Tamiya panzer IV with the original Tamiya mechanical recoil unit that the motor cycles continuously the minute i turn on the power. Ive tried multiple settings in the OP config to no avail. I also tried another mech. recoil unit from my tamiya pershing; same thing. Cannon sound and hi intensity flash trigger properly.

Hi AK, this is probably not the issue but you definitely don't need the following two function triggers:

Aux Channel 4 - Pos 1 (of 2) -> Function #14 - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Disable
Aux Channel 4 - Pos 2 (of 2) -> Function #13 - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Enable

At least, it doesn't make sense to define them on the same switch you are using to fire the cannon. I would remove those two for now and see if that makes a difference.

Unfortunately I am overseas for the time being and I do not have all my equipment and supplies with me to try to replicate this in person. One thing to check is the small limit switch on the Tamiya recoil unit and make sure it is being tripped when the recoil cycles.

Hi Like,

Thanks for the response. I only added those 2 functions in an attempt to fix the issue. :-\

The mech recoils were tested in my pershing with the Tamiya Control board and the limit switch functions as they should.

The other thing that comes to mind is that this is the behavior we would expect if you received one of the faulty boards from Hobby King. The LED lights would usually also not be working correctly and you have said nothing about that, so maybe this is not the problem.

But if possible, see if you can read the markings on MOSFET "Q8" (shown below).

You can read more about the problem in this thread. Hobby King said they fixed production but in fact we now know they continued to sell faulty boards until the very end.

I don't have any experience with the Tamiya, but had a Hooben T55A recoil unit in their early version of the Tank, which I believe was a clone.

Check the wiring, those pesky JST connectors can push out and not be obvious that no connection is being made.  I assume you have a multimeter to see if you have continuity when the switch is closed and none in the open position at the board?  Double check configuration at the JST connection?

Hi,

Yes, the switch on the mech. recoil is good and functioning. All of the lights ive installed (mg and front light) are fully functioning as intended.

AK,

I assume your answer is that you did a continuity check and it was okay?

Okay, looking at your radio details, aux 4 has a low of 1500 and high of 2011.  That seems odd.  Try resetting all your radio inputs so that you get 988 to 2011 for their range.  It could be the radio input is telling the TCB to fire continually.

Another thought is to raise your deadband on channel 4, it may be just on the edge. I've had that happen on my turret settings, kept getting the sound continually or intermittently.

FWIW, Jerry

Good catch Jerry, thanks for helping out with this. AK he is definitely right, there is something not quite right with your aux channels, you should run through Radio Setup one more time and make sure you save the Min/Max for each channel correctly. Aux channels 3-10 all seem off to me (your radio may not actually be using up to 10 but for sure you are using 3, 4, and 5 and those have not been saved correctly).

For a refresher on Radio Setup see this page.

The other thing to make use of is the Snoop feature. If indeed the case was that your channel was continuously firing the cannon then Snoop would have shown that very clearly with repeated messages.

Re-do Radio setup and see if that fixes your issue, if not, connect to Snoop and see what messages you are getting.

Another thought is to raise your deadband on channel 4, it may be just on the edge. I've had that happen on my turret settings, kept getting the sound continually or intermittently.
That is a good tip but the TCB only has deadband adjustments on primary channels 1-4, but not on the Aux channels and in this case the issue appears to be Aux channel 4.

Hi Luke & Jerry,

I adjusted my radio as called out; still no luck on the mech recoil motor not constantly cycling. All other functions still fuction properly as before adjustment of the radio's min-max.

I would remove this until you solve the problem, it is just going to make it more difficult to troubleshoot:
Aux Channel  4 - Pos 1 (of 2) -> Function #14  - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Disable

Connect your TCB to Snoop in OP Confg and turn on your radio. Does Snoop say "Cannon Fire" over and over again each time your Tamiya recoil repeats, or is the physical action happening without any indication from Snoop that the TCB is intentionally trying to fire the cannon?
