News & Announcements / Re: Project Status
« on: February 05, 2019, 12:44:22 PM »
February 5, 2019

Hobby King has informed us they are discontinuing the TCB as it did not sell as well as they had hoped. This means that as of now there is no way to purchase any Open Panzer product, and for the time being the project is essentially in stasis. Of course we will continue to support those who already purchased TCBs.

The TCB was for sale from roughly the summer of 2017 through November of 2018, however for most of 2017 sales were suspended due to mistakes made by the Hobby King production facility. In total we can say that product was available to purchase for a solid 12 months anyway. During that time approximately 500 TCBs were sold. This is a small number for a large company like Hobby King but for a small open-source operation, selling into one of the smallest market segments in the entire RC industry, it feels like a respectable success.

I am thankful for the enthusiasm of community members, and all the great ideas they submitted, many of which were adopted and made the TCB a much better design.

If we are able to resume production through some other means in the future, of the TCB or any of our other products, it will be announced here.

This information is in the Wiki, but the answer is, Prop1-3 (and actually all 8 RC outputs), as well as the two RADIO connections, provide regulated 5 volts. The TCB can source up to 3 amps for all 5 volt outputs combined.

Open Panzer Help / Re: 24v Battery, Futaba Sbus receiver
« on: February 04, 2019, 12:04:28 PM »
finally, I found it is working with r2008sb.

r2008sb has only sbus, not like the r3008sb which also supports sbus2.

However, only 2 out of 8 position switches, 1 rotary knob can be recognized by OP config. I will try the Delta8 receiver some days later.
It will work with R3008SB if you configure it correctly. 3008 still uses original SBus out the "8/SB" port, and even so-called "SBus2" is not a different protocol, it is the very same thing only it accepts 2-way traffic. Did you try both CH mode B and D? You have not told us.

Every manufacturer is different in how many channels they pass through over the SBus connection. The 10J is FHSS and is considered to be in Futaba's budget line of transmitters (although it is still ridiculously expensive). Possibly it only passes 8 channels over SBus, or even less. Even without SBus, the 10J has rather more physical controls (13) than it does actual channels (10), so inevitably many of the switches are not going to be used or else you need to configure which ones are transmitted.

It is not clear to me the Delta 8 is going to give you anything different, if the limitation is with your transmitter.

According to page 29 of the 10J manual, you need to set the R3008SB receiver to CH Mode B or D. It's not clear what the difference is between those two modes with regards to the SBus output, possibly nothing. I would try both modes, and connect your receiver to the TCB using the receiver's "8/SB" output.

If you are able to connect to the TCB with OP Config then VMWare is probably not your issue, otherwise you would have had a problem already before that.

To answer your earlier question, no, the receiver doesn't need an extra power source, it obtains 5 volts from the 3-pin connection to the TCB.

Ulrich confirms the R3008SB receiver works, so yours should too. There are two receiver connections on the TCB, try the other one. In other words, you have probably been using the bottom connector which is labelled for SBus, but try the top one too and see if that makes a difference.

Does your receiver turn on correctly? Is there a light or anything on the receiver that you can use to confirm?

I have not used this receiver personally but just looking at images of it, I see there are two SBus connections on it, one labelled "8/SB" and the other "S.BUS2"

I don't know what the difference is but try both of those, and make sure you have the polarity correct. Possibly there may be some settings in your transmitter to enable SBus, I don't know.

Right, Dipswitch #5 needs to be in the ON position, glad you found that.

Now do you have any issues detecting the receiver?

Ok then. Good luck with the swap, it is certainly doable for someone with experience and a steady hand. Hobby King got some hapless Chinese guy to redo countless of their boards and although they looked awful they did work.

You're right about the IRLML2502. The one you listed will be a perfect replacement.

I'm quite sorry about this state of affairs and the trouble it's caused you. I am very happy Hobby King decided to produce these boards on my behalf, but their service, level of quality, and other issues which are not publicly apparent have been a complete disappointment. I wish it were not so.

It's confirmed, they are the wrong MOSFETs.

It's weird, after the super-low sale price on the TCBs over Black Friday, Hobby King was sold out for several months. Then just about a week or two ago they showed stock again but only in the US warehouse. I'm guessing this is when you bought yours? Now they are showing out of stock once more.

I wonder if they just found some old ones laying around and put them for sale. This could explain why you got one that was produced all the way back in summer of 2017.

Anyway, you have the two choices discussed - try to get a refund/replacement from HK, or replace the MOSFETs yourself. Since HK are out of stock, I don't think you'll get a replacement. If you seek a refund, it's possible they may let you keep the faulty unit, but they might also ask you to send it back. They were known to take both approaches back in the day, so who knows.

The absence of hand-reworking by itself doesn't necessarily signify anything, since by now we would expect boards to be coming correctly assembled straight from the factory. But possibly this is old stock that never got fixed, who knows. They tell me nothing and I'm not even sure how many production runs they made or if they ever made more more than one to begin with.

If you do decide to re-work the board yourself be sure you are comfortable with very fine soldering. It is not easy to do and you can always make things worse in the process. Getting a replacement from HK would be best but I pity anyone who has to deal with their customer service department so I won't blame you whatever you choose.

Hi Brad,

I hate to say this, but it sounds an awful lot like you have received a bad board from Hobby King, with the incorrect MOSFETs. I thought they had fixed that problem a year ago, but maybe a few have still slipped through the cracks. The behavior you describe is what we would expect with the wrong-MOSFET-problem, all the outputs they control will just be continuously on. You can read this thread for more information where we discovered the problem in the first place.

Look at the components highlighted in the photo below and try if you can to read the numbers on them (it will be very small). If you can make out the part number post it here and let me know.

Hi Larry,

The TCB is compatible with the Futaba SBus protocol, they are the ones that invented SBus. If you get a Futaba SBus receiver you will have no problems, and you will get a lot more channels than just 1-4.

Yes, you will need a BEC or similar device to power the TCB if you are using a 24 volt system. The "max amps the TCB allows" is a confusing question. The TCB itself draws very little current. If you are using the onboard Motor A & B outputs, for example to drive your turret motors, note they can provide up to 2 amps max each (so 4 amps total). This may not be enough current for your turret, only you will know. The TCB can also provide up to 3 amps total to other 5 volt devices (lights, servos, etc). So size your BEC or converter appropriately. The more relevant question is, what is the "max amps your BEC will allow."

Of course you can still power your Sabertooth directly at 24 volts, it does not need to operate at the same voltage as the TCB so long as they share a ground connection. And of course your Sabertooth will still be able to provide up to 32 amps to each drive motor.

Keep us posted on your project! I have been waiting for someone to use this in a 1/6 scale model.

Scout Dev / Re: Home Build
« on: January 26, 2019, 11:33:21 AM »
Hi Neil, I also used those cheap VNH2SP30 carrier boards when I was first testing. At some point the money you spend will equal what it would have cost you to just buy the Pololu Qik 2s12v10 which is very similar to the Scout! But then you wouldn't have the fun of coding and frying things.

The last version of the Rev 10 firmware can be found on this page (it's just a hex, use OP Config to flash it to your Arduino). You can also see the Rev 10 schematic on that page, which you will want to follow.

But, you can actually still use the code on GitHub, which will let you see how it all works. You just need to change the line at the top of the OpenPanzerScout.ino file, around line 30:

Code: [Select]
    // Motor Chip Selection
        const uint8_t MotorChipVersion =    2;          // 1 - VNH2SP30, used on Scout boards through Rev 10
                                                        // 2 - VNH5019,  used on Scout boards from    Rev 11

Set MotorChipVersion = 1 to revert to the VNH2SP30 version. In fact the only real difference is in the way it reads current draw since the two versions of the chips report it slightly differently.

Have fun testing and keep us posted on your results!

You have described multiple issues, let's narrow it down to a single one to start. Connect the TCB to OP Config in Snoop. Toggle the cannon switch on your transmitter. Does Snoop show that the cannon is being fired? If not, you need to check your channel assignments, function triggers, or run through Radio Setup again.

Note also that if you have the Mechanical Barrel type set to "Airsoft" and you don't have an airsoft unit connected, the cannon fire function will not work correctly. If you don't intend to use airsoft, uncheck the mechanical barrel section or set the type to Mechanic Recoil, whichever is appropriate for your setup.
