In my experience motor selection for these models is not as great as you will find for RC crawlers. The best way to slow down the model is to change the gearbox. I assume you are using the stock Heng Long gearbox.

The highest reduction gearbox I am aware of is the "5:1" gearbox, it used to be made in brass by Asiatam but that has sadly been discontinued, however you can still buy it in steel version from Torro.de or RCTank.de and maybe other places as well if you look around. I have not had a problem ordering from Germany to the US and I assume it would be just as easy from Australia.

You can also limit the maximum forward/reverse speed in OP Config but of course it is best to get a realistic driving speed with gearbox selection if possible.

Normally, Taigen VS Taigen is not one shot one kill, it took many shots before destroyed. So that I try to change OP setting into match number hit with original Taigen board.

Ok, that is interesting. In my testing Taigen always dies after 1 hit (ie, engine must be restarted). How many hits does your Taigen take from another Taigen before being destroyed? What Taigen versions are you using?

Taigen IR is a very strange thing. There are three versions of the board as we know (V1, V2, and V3) and each one uses a slightly different IR signal. In fact, I have also identified two variants of the V2 board (I call them V2-A and V2-B) and they also use a different IR signal! In every case the IR signal is close, but not exactly the same. There are also two versions of the Taigen IR receiver (early green board and later red board). It seems to me Taigen has not cared very much about IR functionality and have been very sloppy with development and compatibility.

Yet another very unique build. This will certainly test the limits of the TCB's functionality, but then again, this is precisely the unusual case it was designed to work with. I will be interested to see what you come up with.

You absolutely can use the TCB to battle with Taigen tanks, as you have demonstrated yourself. If you want it to be a fair battle, you should set the TCB to also become destroyed with 1 hit. You can do this under the "Custom Weight Class" on the Battle tab of OP Config, and then selecting the custom class on the TCB using the dipswitches.

We can not change the behavior of the Taigen board, it is what it is. But you can of course change the behavior of the TCB to match it.

Very nice! I love all the variants of the PzIII, it is probably my favorite tank of all time. This is a very interesting subject you have chosen, and you are off to a great start with the paint job. I will be watching this build with interest.

One other feature that has been requested and which I've finally added are "sound banks," which are basically like playlists on your MP3 player (note the sound card requires WAV files, not MP3s).

With the latest firmware update the Sound Card features two banks (A & B) of up to 20 sounds each. Unlike the user sounds which you select directly (for example, "play user sound #7"), with the sound banks you control the list with options like "play next," "play previous," or "play random."

As always there is a specific nomenclature required for your file names, you can read about that in the Wiki at the links I provided above. Sound banks are available both in RC mode and when used with the TCB (when you select the Open Panzer Sound Card in OP Config you will see new sound bank functions added to the function list, and then you just assign triggers to them as usual).

With all the changes that have been made recently I wouldn't be surprised if some bugs have crept in, so if anyone notices odd behavior please let me know here in this thread.

I'd like to do some more testing of these changes but hopefully I am nearing the end of physical development on this device, and then we can turn our attention to possibly finding someone willing to manufacture it.

Been a while, and it's time for an update on the sound card development.

The first hardware version, which is what most of the beta-testers have, featured a 2.6 watt amplifier. Version 2 of the hardware upgraded the onboard amp to a 10 watt version but otherwise remained the same.

Version 3, of which the files are now available, adds 3 light outputs and 1 servo output. Presently these outputs are used only in RC mode (when the sound card is controlled directly with RC signals rather than from the TCB). The TCB already has its own light and servo outputs so it doesn't really need the ones on the sound card, but I may add some ability to utilize them anyway at some point in the future.

The firmware has also been worked on extensively. Before now the options for RC control were very limited, and the five RC inputs had fixed function assignments. That has now changed, the sound card now has a wide variety of settings that can be manipulated by the user when used in RC mode, these settings must be put into an ".ini" file (a specially formatted text file), and this file placed on the Micro SD memory stick along with your sound files (when used with the TCB, settings can just be communicated directly from the TCB to the sound card so the ini file is not needed).

I have released a Windows application that I call "INI Creator" which is just a convenient tool to generate the .ini file. You can download it from the Downloads page. Again, this application is only needed if you plan to use the sound card in RC mode. If you are using it with the TCB, you can do all your setup in OP Config as usual.

In RC mode, each of the five input channels can now be configured as switch inputs (with up to 6 positions each) with user-selectable functions for each position, but two of the channels can also be assigned as your throttle input (in parallel with your ESC) or optionally as a volume control from your radio (you can always still use the physical volume control). With the servo and light outputs, the Sound Card could now give basic RC models a complete set of engine and user sounds, as well as a cannon effect (with sound, servo recoil, and flash), machine gun effect (with sound and blinking light), and a third light to be used as headlights/second machine gun/whatever.

Hopefully these changes will make the Sound Card a useful product on its own right apart from the TCB. Primarily I am thinking it should be a useful addition to stock Taigen / Heng Long models and the like.

The instructions for using the sound card are slightly different depending on whether you are controlling it via hobby RC or with the TCB, and some of the sound files are different. There are two pages in the Wiki now, one for each application.

Wiki page > Open Panzer Sound Card with TCB

Wiki page > Open Panzer Sound Card in RC Mode

PS: For those beta-testers with V1 or V2 hardware, you can still use the RC functions and INI Creator, the only thing is you won't have any light or servo outputs.

That is simply how the Taigen works - one shot and it's dead. The number of hits that you can specify in OP Config determine the number of hits the TCB can receive, but it has no ability to modify the behavior of the other device. Tamiya is the standard and if you had a Tamiya MFU you could tell it how many hits to receive before death, aka, the "weight class." But the Taigen is a very simple device, one hit one kill. Your TCB is working properly.

The Beier USM-HL-2 is only compatible with certain Taigen and Heng Long units as described on their page, basically the RX-18. So no, it will not work with the TCB.

It would be possible to use the Beier USM-RC-2 in conjunction with the TCB, if you have a receiver that will output standard PWM servo signals in addition to the PPM, SBus or Ibus that the TCB requires. I have also considered adding code that would more closely allow integration with the USM-RC-2 with the TCB in a similar manner to the way the Benedini Mini has been integrated, but to date this code has not been added as I've never been motivated enough to purchase the Beier. To my knowledge very few people actually use it, compared to the number of people using the Benedini.

But you could still use it as a parallel device because the USM-RC-2 is simply controlled via standard RC.

Very cool, I love the synchronized engine flaps! Thanks for reporting back on the steering, I'm glad to know it works. I'm curious, what percent of steering command have you copied to the tracks? It doesn't look too aggressive, which is probably good for realism. If you haven't already, you might also want to experiment with the three turn modes, you may find one works better than the other. I like to assign them to a 3-position switch so I can experiment on the fly.

That looks fine to me. One thing to note is that I have not yet got OSH Stencils to create a link for the V3 board design, but you can still order your own easily enough by going to OSH Stencils, uploading the Eagle .brd file (found in the Eagle Board and Schematic zip file on the Downloads page), for material select 3 mil polyimide film, and then checkout.

Eventually I will get a direct link to the product and include it on the Downloads page but the sound card board has been under-going continuous revision over the last several months and I want to wait until it is finalized.

Open Panzer Help / Re: Assembling Boards by Hand
« on: September 01, 2018, 01:44:24 PM »
Hi Pand,

I would highly, highly recommend you just buy the TCB from Hobby King rather than try to assemble your own. I don't think I have ever assembled one myself for less cost than what they are selling them for. HK can buy the components in bulk but you will be buying them in small quantities at a far higher unit cost. The processor on the TCB is especially difficult to reflow correctly and I have ruined as many of them as I have made successfully even though I have a lot of experience with reflow soldering. I think my average cost for home-built, functional TCBs is probably somewhere north of $100 per board. That is 2-3 times what HK charges for a board made by a machine.

I can see why people would want to assemble their own Scout or sound card since those products are not yet available. They are also much easier to assemble having far fewer components. But there is no reason to assemble the TCB unless you really just like a challenge and don't mind blowing money for the fun of it.

Nevertheless, with regards to the bill of materials you listed:

  • ERJ-PA3F1001V - any 1k ohm 0603 resistor
  • ERJ-PA3F1002V - any 10k ohm 0603 resistor
  • ERJ-PA3F1003V - any 100k ohm 0603 resistor
  • C0603C103K3RACTU - any 0.01 uF 0603 capacitor (> 5v rating)
  • C0603C104K3RACTU - any 0.1 uF 0603 capacitor (> 5v rating)
  • JMK212BJ476MG-T - I have found a possible substitute but not sure if it is exactly the same - GRM21BR60J476ME15L - your substitution will work fine
  • IRLML2502TRPBF - try using the ZXMN2F34FHTA instead.

As to your question about reflowing - I don't think it matters if you use a pan or not on the hot plate, i never do but I'm sure it would work. I usually just put a piece of aluminum foil on the hot plate surface but not for any thermal reasons, just to keep the hot plate clean. The flux in your solder paste will melt during reflow and trickle through the vias to the surface below, without the aluminum foil this will cause little stains on the surface of the plate which doesn't really matter but I might want to use my plate for cooking food sometime too.

The main thing to be careful with during reflow is to monitor the temperature and make sure you don't go over 200*C.

News & Announcements / Re: Project Status

Problems with faulty hardware on TCB boards from Hobby King from 2017 seem to be resolved. We have not received reports of any issues with boards sold in 2018, and the majority of those who received faulty boards in 2017 were ultimately issued refunds if they went through the process.

  • The faulty boards that Hobby King sold last year now seem to be a thing of the past. I have heard no hardware problems reported since late last year.
  • A few users have been testing prototype versions of the OP Sound Card, but the hardware and firmware are still in a state of flux and the ultimate design has not yet been finalized. I hope to complete basic development this year but even then, there is no guarantee I will be able to find a manufacturer willing to assume the risks of production. At this time and for the foreseeable future, if sound is important to you then you need to examine in advance the Benedini or Taigen sound card options, and see if they will meet your needs/budget. If not then I would steer you away from the project at this time because I can't guarantee if/when our sound card will be available.
