Hi Chris, unfortunately the boards are not for sale anywhere presently, and building one yourself is likely to cost as much or more than a Tamiya! But you are free to use the designs to have them made somewhere if you want, however it is not a simple or inexpensive process, and to date I don't know anyone who has done it.

There are several people tinkering with DIY-versions of the TCB but you're right posting activity has declined. However web stats still show healthy traffic to the site, I think a lot of people find the information they need without having to post anything.

Thanks for letting me know! I knew you went by Rich, should have guessed!

Hi Tschüss, welcome to the forum. I'm sure your many skills will be useful for tinkering with tanks and I saw your other post about soldering SMD micro-SD card sockets, thanks.

As for the Scout, as you may know it is only a speed control (ESC) so by itself won't allow you to do much other than drive two motors, but for 1/35th scale there are much smaller ESCs that would be better choices.

I agree with you the TCB will no doubt be too large to fit into a 1/35 scale model. It might be just possible to fit one into a 1/24th scale model, such as the VsTank and FOV type models, if they are still sold.

Tamiya has a line of 1/35 RC tanks and you try to use those electronics, but I don't know if you can find them for sale separately, you may have to buy a whole kit and being Tamiya they are not cheap. There is also a company called 35rctank.com that sells RC conversion kits for various 1/35 scale models, possibly some of their electronics could be adapted. Finally Clark lists a TK30 board on their website for 1/35 scale models but I don't know if the board is for sale anywhere.

For such a small model I would probably just control it via RC directly without any fancy electronics which you probably don't need anyway. Just an RC receiver, speed controllers for the drive motors, and program the mixing in your transmitter.

Very cool Jerry, I like it! I'm sure people without a 3D printer should be able to use the stl files to order a premade part from Thingiverse or somewhere. I'm sure this would interest RC tankers in general since it is universally compatible.

I would remove this until you solve the problem, it is just going to make it more difficult to troubleshoot:
Aux Channel  4 - Pos 1 (of 2) -> Function #14  - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Disable

Connect your TCB to Snoop in OP Confg and turn on your radio. Does Snoop say "Cannon Fire" over and over again each time your Tamiya recoil repeats, or is the physical action happening without any indication from Snoop that the TCB is intentionally trying to fire the cannon?

Good catch Jerry, thanks for helping out with this. AK he is definitely right, there is something not quite right with your aux channels, you should run through Radio Setup one more time and make sure you save the Min/Max for each channel correctly. Aux channels 3-10 all seem off to me (your radio may not actually be using up to 10 but for sure you are using 3, 4, and 5 and those have not been saved correctly).

For a refresher on Radio Setup see this page.

The other thing to make use of is the Snoop feature. If indeed the case was that your channel was continuously firing the cannon then Snoop would have shown that very clearly with repeated messages.

Re-do Radio setup and see if that fixes your issue, if not, connect to Snoop and see what messages you are getting.

Another thought is to raise your deadband on channel 4, it may be just on the edge. I've had that happen on my turret settings, kept getting the sound continually or intermittently.
That is a good tip but the TCB only has deadband adjustments on primary channels 1-4, but not on the Aux channels and in this case the issue appears to be Aux channel 4.

So my question is: Does anyone know of another source of the Arduino Mega2560Pro other than Robotdyn that can be flashed okay by OPConfig??
To answer that question specifically, any board with an ATmega2560 processor can surely be flashed by OPConfig, but I understand your actual issue is the regulator on these. It may be that the regulator on those boards is not so much faulty as they are unable to handle the loads your shield may require, as Jurgen says (on the other hand, being a Chinese product I also would not be surprised if in fact they are using poor quality components).

At any rate I don't have any personal experience with other aftermarket boards, but I suspect they are all going to have regulators in the ~1 amp range (the specs for the RobotDyn regulator actually says only 800mA).

The other thing that comes to mind is that this is the behavior we would expect if you received one of the faulty boards from Hobby King. The LED lights would usually also not be working correctly and you have said nothing about that, so maybe this is not the problem.

But if possible, see if you can read the markings on MOSFET "Q8" (shown below).

You can read more about the problem in this thread. Hobby King said they fixed production but in fact we now know they continued to sell faulty boards until the very end.

Hi AK, this is probably not the issue but you definitely don't need the following two function triggers:

Aux Channel 4 - Pos 1 (of 2) -> Function #14 - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Disable
Aux Channel 4 - Pos 2 (of 2) -> Function #13 - Airsoft/Mech Recoil - Enable

At least, it doesn't make sense to define them on the same switch you are using to fire the cannon. I would remove those two for now and see if that makes a difference.

Unfortunately I am overseas for the time being and I do not have all my equipment and supplies with me to try to replicate this in person. One thing to check is the small limit switch on the Tamiya recoil unit and make sure it is being tripped when the recoil cycles.

It most likely is not possible, or anyway practical. The reason isn't because the pads are so small, it's because they are hidden underneath the socket where you can't really reach them. You will find the same issue with the amplifier IC.

The solution here as with the Scout is really to reflow the board.

I am curious if when the gyro moves the barrel, the TCB will play the barrel elevation sound too.
In this case I think not, the gyro would be controlling the barrel and the TCB would have no idea what it is doing.

If you are using servo outputs on the TCB and your gyro takes servo inputs, then no you won't have any problems with releasing magic smoke.

Various people have tried gyro stabilization using different methods, no one yet to my knowledge has found a simple and straightforward method that works, though I have seen some very complicated methods that work. If you have success be sure to let the forum know, it would be useful for any tank that uses servo elevation, not just those running the TCB.

Great news! I don't know why the OP Config utility didn't work when the DEscribe did. I have never tested a 2x12 personally but I know others who have used them, and the commands are the same for all Sabertooth models. If I someday find a bug in my program I will fix it but for now I don't know what it could be.

The main thing is yours is now working.

Good luck with your move and keep us posted on your model!

Well you are making progress and that is a good price for 4-layer boards. OSH is definitely the best place to get prototypes in the US, unless you have special board requirements. Will be interested to see how they turn out!
