Open Panzer Help / Re: Airsoft switch position detection issue solved
« on: October 24, 2018, 04:14:16 PM »
Great, that was quick!  I checked back, and sure enough all the other TCBs of mine had the LVC enabled EXCEPT the Russian KV2.  Yes, with the LVC engaged, the Barrel checked, the airsoft was initially enabled on the snoop dump, but at the end it was disabled.  I checked operation before downloading the new firmware, and then after and it all works as you described.  Thanks so much for clearing that all up.

Just a quick question though, where exactly do the radio settings/reads reside?  are they included in the .opz file? or do they only reside in the TCB? When I just updated the firmware, I had to re-read the radio for some reason...not sure why, maybe like you said my firmware was a little out of date though no message occurred.   Only got one that said to check OPConfig for updates.

Thanks again, all clear now!!  Jerry

Oh, and I cycled the #5 switch on the board, and snoop comes up right away now....I cycled the other 4 too, just to be sure and it seems one has a weak spring (#2) as it doesn't snap from side to side like the others.....perhaps a dodgy switch.  Is CHE a brand for those??  I'll let it be for now, but if it continues I'll have to change it out.  Any others report a problem with the dip switch?

Hi Luke,

thanks for the quick reply, here is the .opz file for the German KV2....I'll cycle that dip switch to see if it helps....thanks for the tip.   jerry

Hi Luke,

So I checked the box on the one that works (KV2 Russian) and no change, still worked as it should.  Then I checked the box on the other KV2 (German), and it still performed as before, with the airsoft enabled, with the switch set to disable.  Here is a snoop of the German:

Comms changed to USB

I might note that it is difficult to get a snoop from the German, whether it is the rcvr converter, or what, I don't know but it took a while before it would print the debug messages.  I had to switch on/off the power, snoop- connect - disconnect - read the tank...etc. etc. before it finally came up.  I didn't document the steps in the process since I was uncertain of success.  The 'Comms changed to USB' message seems to repeat alot once Snoop started working, even with no input from me?  When I connect to the tank, I have to Snoop first, then click Connect before it will connect properly.  It won't connect without hitting Snoop first. Doubt if this has anything to do with the root problem, just marginal communications over the USB.

So good news is its repeatable, and is an issue with either the XJT rcvr or V2 Turnigy 9x with PWM/Sbus converter.  Bad news, I'm stumped on what difference could cause it.
Differences between tanks:

Item   German    Russian

Motor   ESC          sabertooth
Rcvr     V2 Turnigy   Frsky XSR

Otherwise, Same sound card, amp, speaker, battery, all turret equipment and motors.

Other tanks with the same problem previously but not retested include:

Panther, T34 - Taigen sound card, V2 Turnigy rcvr, sabertooth
StugIII -Taigen sound card, V2 Turnigy rcvr, ESCs
KV1 - Taigen sound card, XSR rcvr, Scout

All are now working as they should w/o box checked.   Not sure where to go from here......if at all....?  Would the track recoil have anything to do with it??

Hi Luke,

That is interesting!!.....well, first to answer your questions:

Luke:What happens? Ie, could it be possible that you accidentally have the switch positions reversed? You can also confirm how the switch is working by toggling it while snooping.
Jerry: Nope, which is was simple like that.  In snoop mode, when starting the tank up initially it shows the airsoft switch in enabled position, which it is, of course, in the disabled position.  When I cycle the switch to enabled, it doesn't show a change in status, but move it back to disabled and it shows a change of state to disabled.

Luke:Are you perhaps using the nice SBus receiver for that one tank and those pesky PWM-PPM converters on the other 5

Jerry: Great minds and all that!  I now have one XJT module installed, and the first thing I did was swap it into an airsoft tank with this issue, as well as noise issues from the smoker motor.  Unfortunately, no joy.  The only two things the new module and XSR recvr did was the control stick readings are now rock solid when reading the radio, and when I turn off the radio the lights on the tank immediately start to blink (indicating the loss of signal should now work).  Otherwise, no noticeable operational changes.  I also noticed if I get the antenna's too close to the Mini/Amp, I start to get a feedback hum.  Anyways, not sorry about the module change, having the rcvrs so small is a definite plus as well as the loss of signal now working.

I will go back and check/uncheck the 'trigger with cannon' on both the anomaly tank (Russian KV2) and one that misbehaves (German KV2) to ensure it is repeatable.  Both are nearly identical (motor controllers differ), and the German has the PWM/Sbus converter vs the Russian has a just installed XSR Sbus rcvr (the russians get all the goodies....lol).  If not, I'll swap back the old PWM/PPM rcvr into the Russian, and repeat the test.  This is getting fun to troubleshoot!

Open Panzer Help / Re: Benedini Mini and volume control with 9x pot?
« on: October 20, 2018, 04:38:57 PM »
So back on the original topic of the volume control of the Mini with a pot, I finally got tired of always looking down to see if the volume pot was centered on my tanks with the Mini in them, so I just replaced the 9x pot with a three position switch, spring center off, single pole identical to ON1/ON2 switch.  15k resisters between the center and outer poles, and wired just like the pot (center wire to center pole, and outer wires to outer poles), and put it in place of the P3 pot since I use P2 for all the taigen sound card and IBU2 tanks with servo driven pots and P3 isn't used for anything on any of my tanks.

And it all works great with only having to reassign channel 7 to P3 rather than P2.  I am very pleased that fiddling with the volume pot isn't required on the tanks with the Mini in them (currently 3....).

HTH,  Jerry

Hi Luke,

I switched to PWM/PPM from PWM/Sbus, no effect.....then noticed the sound pot which is acting like a 3 position switch was turned down, so the sound was off.  Once turned up, it did sound with engine off....so all is as it should be......dooh!! number 2.....

Hi Luke,

Thanks for the quick reply, and you do have it correct (at least in my mind) that the checking of the box enables the airsoft, which apparently is later in the setup and overwrites the switch position at startup.  It shows "enabled" when I snoop the startup, but "disabled" when I uncheck the box under snoop.  All seems to be working with cannon fire by left stick upper right, including sound, IR, track recoil, and airsoft enabled with the box unchecked.  Rearranging the startup sequence would be great as if someone sets it like me, and forgets to cycle the switch, the airsoft would discharge perhaps at an inopertune moment or location?  Better to be safe than sorry my Mother used to say.....lol.

As for the sound of the cannon, I have three benedini, and two will have cannon sound with engine not started.  None of the Taigen have cannon sound without engine running, like you said.  The only difference is the one that doesn't sound is hooked up Sbus from the PWM converter, besides it being the only ESC motor controller with the Benedini.  Not an issue though, just was wondering. I'll swich it back to PWM to see if that changes it.  I only went to Sbus to help quell the motors chattering with the noisy smoker motor, which seems to be an issue with the ESC motor drivers.

Thanks again,  Jerry

Hi again,

I just thought I'd mention an anomaly to my discovery.  One of the 6 boards that I have connected to airsoft cannons did not have the issue.  It worked perfectly even though the box was checked to 'trigger with cannon'.  I cannot understand why, but all the others responded correctly when I unchecked the box.  This one board also will have cannon sound when the engine is off, all the others have no cannon sound when the engine is off though they will have track recoil.

This isn't an issue, just thought you'd like to know that not all of my TCBs were exactly the same, even though as far as I can determine, they all are setup the same.....ghosts I presume??? (Halloween ??)

Open Panzer Help / Airsoft switch position detection issue solved
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:16:08 PM »
Hi Luke,

Well after a couple of hours working on the issue of the TCB starting out with the airsoft switch (channel 5 on my 9x's) enabled when it was in the disabled position, I finally discovered it was the 'trigger with cannon' box in the MOTORS SECTION;MECHANICAL BARREL of the OP config.  I had it checked even though the note next to it said 'if unchecked use function trigger'.  I had reasoned how else can you trigger the airsoft??  so left it checked.  Anyway, apparently it overrides the position of the switch assigned to it.
Not sure if you want to fix this? or just leave it as apparently I'm the only idiot who has had the problem (dooh!!)

Thanks, Jerry

Okay Luke,   I relented and ordered up an XJT module and an XSR rcvr......all off Amazon (can't wait a MONTH for HK to deliver from Hong Kong).  So we'll see how this works out.  I guess I'll start equipping all my OP tanks first (now up to seven).....omg.

Luke,

I am SOOOOOo   offended......janky?? really  :)

Thanks for the explanation, that does make sense now.  The antenna was laying in the bottom, way up front under the battery, parallel to the aluminum sides of the chassis.  So I moved it to hang out the front, away from all the metal and bingo.....JOY!!! It is back working.  So I moved it to the other side, away from the battery, under the speaker but still parallel along the side of the chassis.....and it repeated the problem.  Hey, its repeatable.....oh more joy.

So I just strapped the antenna to the top of the speaker, which is a polystyrene enclosure, and it is working great.   Tooooo easy.

Oh, and you're not going to believe this one.  The airsoft now works first time??? wtf?? so antenna placement is that critical that the airsoft switch position from the transmitter can now be received??  That is too interesting.

Thanks so much Luke, you are the best!!

And MAYBE I'll consider the new module.....grudgingly.......HA!!

Hi Luke,

Thanks for the lengthy reply.  You make some great points.

Quote
The first thing I will say, is that the TCB's 5 volt supply is limited in current capacity. It can power the Benedini but I would not recommend using it to power the Benedini + external amplifier. Now a 2.5 watt amp isn't much and this may not have anything to do with your problem, but it's one thing to try eliminating and see if it helps.

Yes, I thought that too so I disconnected both the Benedini and the amp from the BEC.  I restarted the tank (no sound but rear light illuminated - running light), and tried the throttle, it tried to go forward then promptly quit, serial off).  I think the amp is taking about 0.6 amps, from calcs.  Not sure about the Benedini though.

It's possible you have a defective TCB, but if so, that TCB should continue to fail if moved to another model, so you should be able to determine that conclusively. If the TCB works in another model but not the KV2, there is something different about the setups between those models that you need to examine and pinpoint.

I swapped in another TCB, programmed it identically to the KV2, and it performed identically to the KV2 original one.  So apparently its not the TCB hardware.

You describe this issue somewhat imprecisely. At some times you say the TCB "shuts down" by which I take it to mean it has literally lost power and rebooted involuntarily. In other cases you say the engine sound dies slowly and it's not clear to me whether you mean the TCB has shut down or else it incorrectly sent the engine stop command to the Benedini. There is no command from any source that can be sent to the TCB to cause it to "shut down," but obviously you can give it to the command to "turn off the engine." Try your experiments with the TCB hooked up to the computer in Snoop mode and figure out exactly which is happening. If your TCB is literally losing power and rebooting then you have a voltage drop issue or a short somewhere.

Sorry for that, yes I did kind of wander in my descriptions.  I am referring in the whole scenerio not of a TCB shutdown, just a stop running via throttle.  All the other functions like turret, gun elevation, smoke, etc. all still work.  I can even shoot the cannon, and it will give sound and track recoil, though the track recoil will be shorter than normal as the track movement is clipped since it too comes from the serial communication.

If I had to guess this does sound a lot like a low voltage issue but I take your word that your battery is good. Maybe check your wiring and ensure that all components share a common ground. Check your Sabertooth connections (the MOTOR SERIAL connector on the TCB should go GND to 0V, and TX-O to S1 on the Sabertooth), and make sure the dipswitch settings on your Sabertooth are correct.

Yes, thought of these also, checked and double checked the serial connections, and wiring.  As for common ground?  The case for the Sabertooth is screwed down to the gearboxes, which are screwed to the aluminum frame of the chassis.  The TCB though isn't grounded to all that, nor is the benedini or amp, as those just share a common plus and minus for the BEC.

As a side note on susceptibility to noise here is an experience that happened prior to all this:

I was running the gun elevation motor and noticed the sound was erratic, giving an 'ack, ack' noise in between the normal elevation noise.  I ran it a while, hoping it was just brush noise in the motor and with running it would break in.  Well as I continued to run the elevation motor (standard HL/Taigen elevation gearbox with cam wheel) the tank would start to buck (spiking the drive motors) and it would turn off the tank, and then restart the tank.  Since this started to become a bit more drastic than I expected, I removed the elevation motor and gearbox and found the capacitor lead for one pole lying on the other pole (intermittent short) and the other cap lead was broken but still touching the other motor pole.  So a combination short and noise generator?  In disassembling the motor I also found carbon coating the commutator indicating a lot of arcing going on.  Hmmmmmm......  I replaced the motor and now have a elevation motor that runs well, but this does show (and I have had small motor issues before) how noise from the motors can impact the operatability of the TCB and other equipment in the tank.  I'm not sure if this is generic to the issues with the Sabertooth and Serial Communications.

So, where to proceed from here?  I've established that the tank now runs well with the ESC's and the Benidini/Amp hooked to the BEC power source.  However, since the Sabertooth relies on serial communications, not the PWM that supplies the ESC's, I wonder if the serial chip is just enough of a burden to tip the scales on the BEC power?  I will reinstall the sabertooth, and disconnect the amp (the sabertooth has a 5v supply I can tie to), and see if that changes things (although I had tried disconnecting the amp/benedini before with no results - but maybe I didn't give it enough of a recovery period?).  I hope to also, if this thing repeats itself, to monitor the BEC voltage dynamically (as best I can with a DVOM with min/max).  I'll review on how to Snoop also as I haven't had success in getting that to work as yet.

Thanks again, and sorry for the winded post.....Jerry

So it always goes........wry smile.....

I just now swapped the suspect Sabertooth 5A unit into my T55A hooben, which has an earlier sabertooth and sure enough it performed flawlessly (CRAP!!).  I ran it up and down and around for a full 10 minutes and nothing, worked great.  When removing it the motors were warm, but the board was barely above ambient temperature.

I'm now very confused.  Could it be something with the packetized serial communications??  The blue light near the serial connector seemed to be flashing when nothing was happening (on the KV2), and slowed flashing IIRC, when power was supplied to the motors.  When the TCB would shut down, the light went dead.  `

I did check voltage at the controller on the KV2, and it was solid at 8v (just recharged).

When testing before, with the sabertooth hooked up in the KV2....  I disconnected the battery from the Sabertooth and started the tank.  The sound revved up fine with throttle.  So I reconnected the battery, and disconnected the left motor.   Started the tank, fine, tried to throttle it, and it shut down.  So I reconnected the left motor and disconnect the right motor....same thing, it shut down upon throttle.

The packetized serial communications is one way right?? how can the TCB get the message to shut down from the serial controller??

This is really perplexing me...so I'll see about reconnecting the sabertooth up, and look into the communications issue.  Note that I never have seen the red light from the sabertooth indicating any overcurrent or other problem.
