Title: Torro Tiger II acoustic smoker
Post by: johnnyvd on April 17, 2018, 01:29:11 AM
Another project started alongside the FAMO.

The plan is to build a Kingtiger (semi) full metal based on the Torro. I'm building this in commission.
The new owner wants it to look like David Parker's Superking.. http://www.panzerwrecks.com/product/superking/

So i started cutting it up after it arrived (new in box) and gave it some damage on the last remaining fender.

And after this started gutting the inside and designed a new speaker assembly with integrated smoker.
The electronics consist of Openpanzer TCB, Hobbyking ESC's, Benedini Mini, Visaton FRS7W and Henglong/Torro smoker (customized)

The smoker assy works like a charm!

And here a picture of the 3D printed smoker/speaker assembly. Very simple. I will continue designing it so the TCB, Benedini and battery are integrated and the complete assembly is drop-in for the torro tanks.
Later i will design the same for Panzer IV/III and Tiger 1

And offcourse give it back to the community by posting the STEP files..

Very cool, that's a great contribution to the community!

It's hard to tell from the photos, is your smoker driven by the movement of the speaker, or is it still being pushed by a fan?

Title: Re: Torro Tiger II acoustic smoker
Post by: johnnyvd on April 19, 2018, 04:05:39 PM
It is only driven by the speaker.. This way i'm able to keep the smoke heating at 100% while the function becomes proportional due to sound level ;)

I use the stock Henglong heating element and a 5mm vent port in the speaker casing blowing against a 4mm hole in the smoker. Space between the smoker and the casing is approx. 4mm

Very nice, thanks for the detail. I've some sonic smokers before and I think they're a brilliant idea. Much more simple, and more realistic at the same time.

Some details on the Kingtiger.. Base was the Torro/henglong Kingtiger, but the new owner wants the fenders gone.. So i cut the upper hull, removed the fenders and filled up the empty space and added some details..

It has been some time, but work on the Kingtiger did not stop.. With the help of Luke and Lotuswins i managed to combine the 12 lead slipring and use a stock Torro 360 kit with the Openpanzer.

I also designed a mounting bracket for the Openpanzer and Benedini combo that fit in the Kingtiger and the Tiger tanks from Torro. All 3D printed. The brackets also fit a standard Tamiya Nimh 7.2v pack..

The Hobbyking ESC's fit right in front of the gearboxes..

With the electronics mounted i started painting the hull.. Pre-shading, and late war Tri-tonal camouflage from the MIG Takom Kingtiger set.

The new owner wanted a really beat-up look on his Koti, so a lot of weathering,Chipping, streaking and mudding took place.

And here the (almost) final product after many, many layers of paint and weathering products..

So far for this "Superking" project. On to the next.. Another Kingtiger but this time.... With opensound and Scout controller!!

Johnny, that's a stunning model, and a very nice shop too by the way! I do have an idea of how much time it takes to complete a model to that high of a standard, which is why I have never understood how anyone could build one for the purpose of a client - for me, no reasonable amount of money they could offer would be worth the time and effort! You must be both very efficient and proficient - but fast or slow, you are certainly a master detail-er.

As you are also clearly well versed in 3D printing, perhaps one thing we can talk about later is designing a small bracket to mount a 40mm fan to the Scout board. I won't get off-topic in this thread but when you get to that point on your next model be prepared for me to ask you about it!  :)

Thanks Luke! I will be building my first series of Scout's and Opensound cards very soon.
So if you have an idea what you want concerning the fan, please let me know, i will design one for you!

Very nice Johnny!  Great job on the inside with the neat wiring.  So many tanks I see look like a rats nests of wires underneath just waiting to have issues.  Do you make any gearbox covers to keep the grease/lube off your wires and electronics?  I really like the mount you made for the Open Panzer to hold your Benedini, that is something any open panzer could use.  Great Job!

Enjoy,
Shad

Thanks Shad,

I will design some grease covers for the gearboxes soon. Otherwise it will get really messy underneath.
When i ironed all the kinks out of the Benedini/openpanzer carrier design, i will share it here on the Forum Acoustic speaker enclosure included!

Any more progress on files for the the 3D printed mounts for OP, RX, and TBS?

Thanks,

Hi Shad, Yes.. I now also have a full interior for the Torro Kingtiger AND the Tiger.. Shame the TCB is discontinued by Hobbyking.. But i still have plenty lying around!
I will scrape the files together and post them tomorrow!

Sounds great!

Yes, sad HK quit with the TCB.  Time to sharpen the soldering skills and reflow skills so one can assemble on their own.

Thanks,
Shad

Not exactly "tomorrow" but better late than never! I recently got a lot of people asking about upgrading their Torro tanks to TCB board.. So i was quite busy lately..

Here one example of a Tiger 1 full metal from Torro/Taigen:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8ly_Y2fSneUohBWTACqMhExPcGY5lUxrSexnfgSebZCtlR_9Z6-XFCFpJkx9MWHkUg1l_gurqcPi1MlrpsstouWb5q1Bk_QWBd8mmLa3AQ6lcr9mD7bjLOprpoG3OEdYpmAPhR_Oy3HxVzk4Y5T8Qe5jveAzdOKctaDBv-8Bn71LrMiANBJo77FRde4QPzKH_xZGwG5naUBSKZLdFsXOsVXr19IGbQT171ry1EiXR-OHQSsvEwyH9nurslmAN5ml6mFZ-VhsDdWVBpG_fwKVYo5oafNxgXda39Z09OBmM_M70_LU8SJZKgpevNq_cT7ueaxEp4BwM9tlRc_XaITSX-c_xEOx3axyNch7ns5scLPVziLnPcN-tb07yMBk1ZekD2O88dcQQYqJGWZx9EvdpJxn9ByYup8P6CRsRLAHYTQ93tVwa4rGazahpp7Op7GjI2AKQ3qSJ5XzKqzXACmW8wGwYhlacwnxCz2fWNu3gmwSTH6kRwLMQos1YQ2pJERyTXpMxyhjMNRPEd1-sdim68Dz9RyyPMs2b9lPSY3GDVll-uaTvl89ZhGX_2cEmb-JmmjWisg-demdoasvhC-IYv2MFvyrxU_qA1tLXnX1TaTkty0unuTNISPYUjfsG5hxcgt7dxEd5kySDohaK_Y_UQGtznOUxUGq=w1278-h622-no)

I had to modify the TCB mounting. The stick battery is quite a tight fit, but works nicely!

Smoker works like a charm:

And, as promised, my gift to the community! The STL files for both the Kingtiger and Tiger 1!

Outstanding!  I am excited to try and print some of this, (newbie 3d printer here)
If you ever build a TCB/TBS holder for a Sherman (Taigen, HL, Tamiya) let me know, I could use one of those too.

Thanks so much for sharing those STLs!

Enjoy,
Shad

My builds are very very slow.  I get very little time to build.  My E8 is maybe 1/4 done and its been over a year since I started it.  I have the parts for a Firefly VC next to it patiently waiting also.  I am a rookie modeler and really slow at assembly and painting these things.  Ill keep at it though.  Real work takes most my time.

Thanks again,
Shad

I'm very intrigued about your success on the acoustic smoker.  How does it push out the smoke??  I understand that the speaker cone moves up and down, pushing the air in and out through the hole to the smoke chamber, but without a check valve in there somewhere, how can it push out the smoke??  Isn't the net displacement of air zero?

Just curious.....since I tried a poor attempt at making one, with obviously no success.  Yours looks great, and I'm now working on a KT too.....

Hi Jerry, Sorry for the late response. Too busy with many other things than tanks..

The trick about the acoustic smoker is that the Henglong smoker has the "pump" unit cut-off.
Then drill the teensy small hole to 4mm.. The speaker enclosure should be fully closed except for one single 4mm hole. Line up the two holes and eperiment with a little space between them!

Thats it! No membrane, valve or whatsoever.. Works like a charm!

Hi Johnnyvd,

Coincidentally my son now has access to a 3D printer, and he printed up a couple of speaker boxes, and battery/TCB holders for me....it fits a treat in my KT.  Thanks a bunch.

As for the smoke flow, it didn't have enough push to put out enough through the tubes and exhaust pipes.  I could remove the tubes from the HL smoker box, and it would do okay, but not connected up.  So I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the side of the box, location not important, and superglued a thin piece of plastic film from an old ipod lense cover over the hole on the inside....only one side of the piece (about 1/2 inch by 1.5 inches long) to make a rough reed valve configuration.  Then I also sealed the speaker wire hole with hot glue.  Now it is working much better to pump out the smoke.

thanks so much for all your work,  Jerry

BTW, the KT set also fits the Taigen Panther, with a minor mod of chamfering the speaker box bottom to fit flush with the bottom plastic.  In case others are interested.....

Great to hear that you can use them! I normally don't have to use a valve or something, just close off the box and leave only the hole opposite of the smoker open. Keep some distance and it works like on the video!
if you have any other good idea's please let me know!

Hi Johnnyvd,

So I now have two tanks with the smoker working with your 3D printed boxes/TCB mounts.  Works a treat.  As for improvements, well, would it be possible to print in the lower half of the smoker box?  That way no drilling or cutting up a good smoker.  My son printed mine in PLA, which I'm not sure would take the temperatures?? If printed in ABS, that should be okay?? Now if we can get just the smoker resistor, after printing the top of the box, we would be golden.

I really like that I have better sound now, as well as no pesky smoker noise in the background, as well as better smoke flow.

Thanks again,  Jerry

Heh, beautiful! Nice to see my logo is still on!

ABS would be sufficient for the heat. It will probably also be resistant to the smoke-oil is guess..
I will change the design "as proposed" I normally just cut the Henglong smokers down to size because they are so cheap. But integrating would be nice..

For my Famo Builds i need to design a speaker/smoker combo also.. So integrating would be a logical step.

As soon as these are ready i will be sharing them again!

So I just fit your design into a KV-2 Taigen.  Here is a picture.  Works great now, larger speaker, and more smoke.  Nothing to modify, it fits in nice and tight.

What software do you use to design the .stl files?? I would like to do something for my T55A, T34 and Sherman.

Hi Jerry, nice to see it fits the KV series also (did not try myselves), i'm can confirm it fits the Torro Leopard 2A6 Also!

I use Siemens Solid Edge 2019 at the moment. This is because it is our company standard together with Siemens Teamcenter PLM solution.

I could share the STEP or Parasolid files with you if you want.. You can modify them in a synchronous 3D CAD package (like Autodesk Fusion 360).

Both SolidEdge and Fusion have "Educational versions" that you are allowed to use for personal use.

Hi Johnny,

I just downloaded Fusion 360, as part of doing a TCB arduino shield in Eagle, so I can now modify the STEP or Parasolid files you offered, would you still be willing to post them?

I'm working on upgrading my T55A to a TCB from a Clark TK22, and a smaller speaker would work much better.  I also have to fit some HK45A ESCs into the space.  So modifying something would be much better than starting from scratch?  I'm ordering a Benedini Mini, to give it some sound presence too.

Thanks again,  Jerry
