Open Panzer Help / Re: Benedini Mini problems
« on: May 14, 2018, 01:34:11 PM »
Hi Rad, thank you very much for this input, this is very useful and even I can follow it! So do this and I can programme a Mikro on a PC? I do wish that TB could have just suggested something similar (for the sake of a few euros) and it would have stopped what has become a difficult disagreement. I know he would rather I buy (and pay postage) for his own but in the circumstances on this occasion it would have resolved the matter amicably and quickly and for little cost.

Thank you both again for your help and suggestions.

Hi mate, as I always say, If you have the money, you (well, not you, I mean everybody) should buy all the stuff directly to Benedini, his job must be apreciated and recognized...

Said that, I cannot justify the price of his stuff. The benedini micros have a price of about 100 euros plus the programming cable, plus shipping... The chinesse knockout can be found for 15 bucks free shipping! IMHO due to Mr Benedini charges so much for his boards, I think he should at least, give the programmer for free, or indicate to users how to do our own. So even when I defend to buy the stuff directly from him, I cannot encourage to buy the programming cable.

Said that, I bought the benedini mikro clone, and it came with a programmer. (everything was about 20 bucks shipping included) but the programmer came bad wired, so I had to investigate what was going wrong. Then is when I found the photo I posted, I just had to swap some wires. Some time later one of my sons broke the chinesse programmer and I did my own with the item that I linked you from ebay. Works flawlessly and I have been able to program everything and to flash my own sounds. When having benedini stuff, having a programmer is a must. I wish I could help you more, but I have no benedini mini to tell you exactly what to do, but it wont be very different. If Mr Benedini lowers the price (lol) or the chinesse guys copies it, I will get one.

But I must confess all my hopes are in the Open Panzer sound board. The posibility of using it as a stand alone (without the TCB) opens a world of marvels. If the sound quality and capability is like the prototype, and if Luke adds a decent bunch of light outputs, I see this little board selling like hot bread...

You can do your own programing cable for less than 3 euros with no soldering at and no previous electronic knowledge at all in seconds. I will try to post what you need here as soon as possible.

EDIT: Ok, this is the diagram I followed for the benedini mikro, I cant find the diagram for the mini. The VCC wire for the mikro is not needed. I believe for the mini should be the same. And this is the board that you can use https://www.ebay.com/itm/Basic-Breakout-Board-For-FTDI-FT232RL-USB-to-Serial-IC-For-Arduino-New-3-3V-5-5V/222345924768?hash=item33c4d990a0:g:MogAAOSwImRYUYAV So for about 2 euros you have a programmer :)

Open Panzer Help / Re: Benedini Mini and volume control with 9x pot?
« on: April 16, 2018, 07:54:59 AM »
I don´t have a benedini mini, but with a micro, the impedance is critic! I had a lot of 4ohm speakers of all sizes, ranging from very small and flat laptop speakers to a home cinema ones that I scavenged, and no one of them works well with the micro. No matter what I tried it was a no go for me.

Then I plugged an 8ohm 1w speaker, and sounded very good. Then I tried another 8ohm 1w speaker but bigger and the sound was even better.

So whatever you do, buy a 8ohm speaker. The bigger the speaker and the box, the better. In case you need more power, you can add an amp like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/XPT8871-DC-3V-3-7V-5V-Mono-5W-Mini-Amplifier-Board-Audio-Amp-Module-One-channel/322979591569?epid=560313104&hash=item4b33157591:g:1gsAAOSwgZ1XtGeb

Hope it helps... I am not expert and this is not based in any scientific knowlegde, those are just my experiments...

Great you are considering to add the light outputs. Well, Im not saying it will be easy, because I have no idea of how to do it, lol, but in the benedini micro it takes next to nothing space in the tiny board and it has something like 10 light outputs... It would be awesome to have something about 5/6 light outputs. Due to the sound card can play so many sounds it would be a pity to not to use them along with the lights. With only 2 light outputs you are very limited...

For example Id use that sound card in the upcoming sdkfz 222. Headlights, rearlights, convoy lights, main gun light, machine guns... Looks like I love the things that glow in the dark, lol.

So, if it is easy (or not very hard) for you to add a decent bunch of light options, why to limit what honestly can be the best sound card in the market? A lot of people from the world of rc trucks might be interested on it too. Most of those trucks have tons of lights.

About its own program, yes, it is a good idea, specially if you want to program the lights work (blinking, steady, flashing etc) But instead of doing another program for just the sound board, I´d add a window for the sound board in the Open panzer config program.

Hi, I did something similar with the benedini micro. With a pot in the minimum position the volume lowers slowly until is completely muted, and at maximum position keeps rising until maximum volume.

You dont need a 3 pos switch, you can do it with any switch in you radio, but if you dont have a heavily modded 9x using a pot is a great idea.

Excelent news in the updates, thank you very much. One of the things I like most are the sound banks, and that feature is not present (or very, very limited) in most of the other aftermarket boards. So yeah, it is great to have a lot of extra sounds.

Also I think I already told you somewhere, maybe through private message (yeah, no private messages, lol) or in one of the forums... But for future hardware updates in the open panzer sound card, I think it will be AMAZING to have some light output features. Like 5/6 programmable light outputs that I can configure for headlights, machine guns and so on.

Due to the sound card can be used stand alone, I see a lot of future for a sound card like that and I would use them in a lot of projects that I have, starting at some buildings (switching lights in houses, simulating fires in buildings, machine guns, a searchling in a tower...) to a what if... 1946 flying saucer of doom and death.

Really, if this board is developed, as far as I know there is nothing out there like that. Other competitor sound boards are just crazy expensive and very limited in sound quantity and quality... So it will be insta-buy for some guys like me. I dont know if that would be too hard or time consuming for you... But Id love to have a unit like that.

Hi. Lol, this jacket has lived so many stories... I bought it about 17 years ago. When I saw it I spent almost all that I had on it... It was an instant love! I liked it a lot because it looked like the Terminator and Mad Max´s jackets. I felt like the big bad boy at school too, lol. I think I wear it about 8 months a year, and you dont believe how many stories we have lived together... I used to wear it in winter under my uniform when I was a paratrooper in the spanish legion, so go and figure! It has such a good quality leather that still looks like new, and is one of the few things that my sons are going to inherit, lol.

About my impressions driving the tank, well, I still have to adjust it a bit more, and to try it in another tank and with other electronics... It was also the first time I take the king tiger outside home and then the first time I drive it over grass, so it behaved very differently than driving at home specially when turning, I guess those big and wide tracks had a lot of grip, and turning at maximum speed was not very easy, or at least very different than stock, but I think it turns now as it should, so no more tank drifting.

I must say I like the new way of driving a lot. I feel it more realistic, less toylike and more like the real thing. I also feel it like having a total speed control. When in first speed you have all the stick (instead of half as stock) for selecting the exact speed you want, so I can really crawl like a crippled turtle if I want to. And of course no more jack rabitting at IR battles. So the tank now drives as it was expected, like a big heavy beast.

If I get bored of it is as easy as selecting another radio model with the stock programming and done. So I think is a win-win situation :)

Ok, I did two small videos, but this is one of those things that are cristal clear when you do it, and not so when you see it.

Im using a Tamiya King tiger in very early stages of painting (note the mufflers are still masked, lol)
From second 0 to 22, thats the maximum speed on first speed-
From second 31 to 39 thats the maximum speed on second speed
From 46 to the end, thats the maximum speed, but I messed the config a bit here. It means the tank can go a bit faster than that, which is way faster than the maximum scale speed.

In the second video... Just driving around. Not a lot to say but thanks to my wife for filming, and to my daughter for making her sounds, lol.

Lol, back in the day, when I was a teenager and the dinosaurs ruled the earth... Nah, not that much, but something like 15 years ago or so I used winzip all day long... But it has been a long time since their software changed and now I just dont like it anymore. I preffer to use the primitive looking but light and fast winrar. Lol, I just remembered this meme:

Heading back to the gears, I just attached the file to the forum. For making the things easy, I did it for the stock Tamiya Electronics, which are so basic that you can use this setup for a lot of RC systems. You can use it as a base for your open panzer radio config, of course.

I have set this file this way: Left stick drives, right stick throttle, THR Machine gun, TRN Maingun, the 3 position ID switch selects the gear, one push button at the back triggers one speed up, and another selects one speed down. If you have no push buttons you can change them to wathever you want in the L.Switches area.

Regarding the video, yes, thats the idea, but so far I have two problems, I still have a lot of snow out there, and second, due to I have to trigger a lot of things, now is impossible to film and to drive at the same time, so I need some help from my wife, so thats not easy neither, lol.

But yeah, it is my plans.

Some news here with the virtual gears system. New video and I have the file ready to share with everyone, the problem is the web does not accept .rar files. Can it be changed? Winzip is a pain.

Meanwhile I will be happy to send the model file to everyone, just give me a private message with your email and I will happily send it to you.

Thanks for the suggestions Rad.

1 - Yes, I can create an alternate turret rotation sound that will play when the engine is off.

Great!

2 & 3 - We could perhaps add even more MG and light sounds, but these extra sounds are precisely what the customizable user sounds are for so I'm not sure it's necessary for me to do so. If you want another light sound, assign it to a user sound and then trigger that user sound with the same trigger that you use for the light. Rather than clog the function list (and take up extra code space/memory) with very specific things few people will want, it is better to give them flexible functions that can be used for many purposes depending on the need.

Thats an idea... But just in the case you add more sounds. I mean, if we only have 6 custom sounds, I preffer to be able to play wagner music instead of just a diferent "click" for a light, lol.

4. Yes, we can add more user sounds.

Great, with more sounds then what you mention above is fine.

5. I'm not sure how a damaged idler sound would be implemented. Presumably it would only play while the tank was moving, but is it just going to be on repeat? Perhaps a better idea is to create a trigger for Vehicle Damaged, and a function to enable/disable squeaks. You could then assign the vehicle damaged trigger to the enable squeaks function, and use some/all of the squeak sounds for your "damaged idler" or whatever.

My idea is a bit like the tamiya electronics and other aftermarket ones are... When damaged or very damaged, to replace the idler sound with something that sounds... Damaged, lol.

With regards to running out of channels - I may consider increasing the number of switch positions that the TCB can process from aux channels. Currently you can select a 2-position or 3-position switch but these can probably be increased. Of course most transmitters do not have switches with greater than 3 positions, unless you install a custom switch or create a special virtual switch using advanced mixes in your transmitter. Most people won't mess with that which is why I didn't go over 3 in the original development, but there will always be some weirdos like you who push the envelope. ;D

There are not enough buttons and switches in a radio. No matter how many you install, just there are not enough!

Perhaps you can post the link to your thread at OpenRC so others following along can see what you did.

Yes, that's the idea. I have not posted it yet, because at this moment is in early stages of testing and it might confuse people more than help. I will even post my eepesky files so people can download them. I also wanted to post a video of it, but it seems I forgot, lol.

Here is the first test video:

Hi there. My confirming pop up window request comes because I screwed it several times. I know when hovering the mouse over the arrow it says what is going to do and I already know what those buttons do... But you know, shit happens, lol. If a pop up window is annoying for somebody, I guess you can always add a small button with "Ok, dont ask me again" or something like that...

Regarding the header row... I had no idea! One problem less! :D

Well, again, I cant thank enought the guys at openrcforums. I managed to have 3 gears and 3 speeds with one in reverse. It needs a bit of polishing, but it works!
