Show and Tell / Tamiya Gepard(Cheetah) SPAAG
« on: September 18, 2018, 09:54:47 AM »
Time for another project that has been sitting too long under my workbench..
It started all when i wanted to buy a Tamiya Gepard for a colleague of mine..

Before i knew it the seller asked me to build a full option model for him..!

The Tamiya Gepard is known as the Cheetah PRTL in the Netherlands and the owners served on one of these when he was in the army..
Here a picture of one of the models and it's box:

And the model itselves:

This is going to be quite some conversion as we have a lot of stuff that has to move controlled by the Openpanzer! Think about:

- Folding the rear radar up and down
- Start rotating the rear radar
- Let the front radar follow the turret
- Driving, shooting, etc. etc.

For the observant reader, i said "one of the models" because i could not resist buying three of them for myselves...  :o

Very nice model, and a great reference example you have there! I really like the Finnish Camo scheme!

I also implemented the transmission option. One of the three position switches now determines forward-neutral-reverse

That is the "clicking" you hear all the time (the video starts with my cat's greeting meaow)

Just to give some updates on the original thread. I recently got the FAMO back on my workbench to FINALLY update the firmware on the TCB.
I must say this works really great!

As you may or may not know i had some problems getting the front wheel steering aligned with the tracks steering and the stroke of the servo had to be limited to only 30%.
Then it turned out that the turning radius of the FAMO was as large as the CERN hadron collider so this did not work out.

Luke then added the option to set the steering servo limits just like the barrel elevation option and this just saved my day!

Thanks again Luke! I will post a movie tomorrow of the FAMO racing over my shopfloor!

Smoothed up the recoil a bit:

Wow, almost looks like there is an autoloader on board  ;D

Show and Tell / Re: Using the Openpanzer TCB for LCM-3 Landing Craft
« on: September 05, 2018, 10:47:21 AM »
That are some great ideas to start with!. Does anybody know if and what type of lights the LCM had? Can't find much about it..

At least i know now that the LCM used 2 Detroit Diesels..

This is a smaller LCM with only one diesel:

So, not a real project at the time (yet), just some people that started asking about the possibilities to use the TCB for this new Torro Landing Craft.

I made two people happy with this new piece from Torro, but the functions of the LCM are quite limited. No lights, sound and smoke. It does have the big hatch on the front that can move up and down...

So, does anyone have good ideas about sounds, lights, smoke other funclionalities? I would really like to hear what you think!

Hi Paul,

Great to see someone in action reflowing this boards. I'm very curious about your progression!
Please post some pictures and your findings while you progress!!

I'm still in the process of tuning my reflow oven and finding a way to organize the SMD components so i can build multiple boards at a time!

Good luck!

Cheers, John

No problem Dean, What 3D software did you use to design the Tank?

Thank you Dean! This is really great that someone shares his complete build! (any chance on getting the STEP files?)

3D printed a mount for the heating coil and put her all back together. Works like a champ.

Nice work. Did you use ABS for the 3D printed support by the way? I can imagine PLA not be too happy with the heat?

Thanks Shad,

I will design some grease covers for the gearboxes soon. Otherwise it will get really messy underneath.
When i ironed all the kinks out of the Benedini/openpanzer carrier design, i will share it here on the Forum Acoustic speaker enclosure included!

I'm always amazed where customers want to cut cost (transmitter) and then still want more and more functions.. But i will try to sell them fancy transmitters then!
