MAC Platform possiblity
« on: February 23, 2017, 08:35:27 AM »
I love my Mac for all of my artistic tasks and wonder if this may ever be a platform for TCB?
No idea of the possible enormity of doing this but just thought I would ask :)

OP Config is developed using Qt, an open source, cross-platform compatible software development environment. It is certainly possible to compile OP Config for Mac, but we need a volunteer to do it. I don't even have a Mac to test with nor have I ever used one in my life, or plan to.

But the source is freely available. If someone is familiar with Qt and would like to compile for Mac that would be a wonderful contribution to this project.

If you look at the TCB To-Do list, this item is already on there.

Following on from this post as I utilise Apple as well and the source code is freely available would it be possible to use the Arduino IDE software to 'customise' the code and then upload it to the TCB?
Cheers
Trevor

Yes that is possible if you are comfortable with code. If you want to change the settings in code that would normally be adjusted with OP Config, it is not very simple, but you could do most of it by changing the defaults in the Initialize_RAMcopy function in the ...\src\OP_EEPROM\OP_EEPROM.cpp file, then forcing a factory reset so those defaults would be loaded (hold the input button while applying power and keep holding for 4 seconds). Really not an ideal solution, but yes it is certainly possible.

A much easier solution would just be to run Windows on your Mac using VMWare or Apple's Boot Camp.

Thank you for the quick reply.
As a Mac specialist I would not recommend the VMWARE or BootCamp options you suggest, connections with 3rd party devices do not always work as the drivers coding can be an issue with Apple's Sandboxing (Security). a simpler solution. I and other Apple users would prefer a different solution that is Apple dedicated.See Thomas's Elmod solution for the ELMOD board. I am not a Developer, howe er if I was I would gladly do this for OPz

You are no doubt correct about the peculiarities of trying to run Windows apps in Apple, and I want to make clear I haven't personally tested it (nor can I offer support if you try!).

You are also correct that a dedicated version of OP Config compiled for the Macintosh operating system would be ideal. I don't know when or if that will happen. It will require work from volunteers, volunteers who don't yet exist.

For the time being, for anybody that requires Mac compatibility you should not purchase this product.
