Open Panzer Help / Re: Settings for Airsoft and IR on one tank

You need to have both positions specified otherwise if you only have "enabled" you will be able to enable it but never turn it off.

It doesn't matter what position your switch is in, on startup the TCB will run through every function once. If your switch is in the disabled position, it should disable the airsoft. I've just tested it on my own and it boots up to the correct state as defined by my switch position. I don't know what is going on in your case but I'm going to leave this be for now because there are other development tasks more pressing at the moment.

Also, for some reason, I didn't have any caps on the motors so I need to do something about that too, perhaps spiking has contributed to the issue?
Possibly, I would think unlikely but it is a good idea to have caps on the motors anyway and it won't hurt.

BTW, speaking of caps, what are the recommended ones to put on the motors??  I need to get a bunch, as I seem to keep swapping them around, and there is no consensus on the internet that I can find.
This I do not know but you can Google it.

I think I'm going to swap out these dreaded gearboxes with the 5:1 Taigen ones, if I can find them, since the low speed control is so much better with this TCB. Are the 4:1 bronze boxes you have in your PIII still available?
I misspoke, the gearboxes I have are brass, not bronze, and were sold as 5:1 (I will correct my original post). They were made by Asiatam and are no longer manufactured although it seems like someone is usually asking for them to be every so often in threads over on RCU. You can still get the equivalent boxes in steel version (louder) from Torro, RCTank.de, and maybe elsewhere.

Beyond 10 amps seems like a lot to me for a Stug, maybe you have a short somewhere. I have a metal PIII that probably weighs 8 pounds with 5:1 brass gears and it doesn't draw 10 amps.

It is quite likely your old battery is unable to keep up with that kind of current draw. As current draw increases battery voltage decreases. If your NiMH voltage drops below ~7 volts under high load, even momentarily, the TCB is going to black out. That would cause the behavior you're seeing.

I don't think this has anything to do with the TCB. Replace your battery and check your motors/ESCs to make sure there isn't a binding issue/electrical short somewhere.

but then will shut down, complete with shut down sounds.
What sound card are you using?

It will eventually start back up, but will repeat.
Meaning, it starts back up automatically without you doing anything? This doesn't make sense. Do you have "auto start engine with throttle" set?

BEC is rock solid at 5.0 volts.
What BEC is that, and what is it powering?

I'm sure your motors are not drawing too much current and even if they were it shouldn't cause the behavior you're seeing unless you have a very weak battery - which is definitely something worth checking. Swap it out for the battery in your Elefant for example, just to be sure.

Check that you don't have an extremely short "Auto Stop Engine when idle" setting specified.

Ultimately you're going to have to do more troubleshooting on your end. Do the basics. Re-flash firmware. Make sure you have Radio Setup parameters saved correctly. Ensure you don't accidentally have some secondary trigger assigned to turn off the engine. Try loading an OPZ file from one of your other models that is known to work into this Stug and see if that fixes it. Or, load the OPZ from the Stug into your Elefant and see if the problem transfers or goes away. Try to observe this behavior while the TCB is connected in Snoop. Is the engine shutting down or is the whole board rebooting? Keep digging until you can find something more specific.

Not sure why you have to toggle the switch, that is not a behavior I can replicate on my end. All channels are read on startup and any function assigned with the position of those channels is executed, if you have a switch set to enable airsoft in a certain position and the switch is in that position when the TCB starts, then the enable airsoft function will be called. Perhaps try turning your radio on before the TCB. Maybe could also have something to do with your PWM-PPM converter if you're still using that, though it seems unlikely.

Hi Jerry, finally had a bit of time and tracked down this bug. As usual, it was introduced as a side-effect to a recent change somewhere else. It should be fixed now, I've posted a new TCB firmware release that you will need to flash (0.93.04). It won't erase any of your settings nor do you need to update OP Config.

Let me know if you have any more issues.

Very interesting device you have there. To answer your question, anything is possible but to create a timed movement you would need to modify the code slightly and recompile, it's not hard for someone familiar with the process but I don't recommend it for most people. I don't think it would be a good solution for you.

Johnny's idea of using the recoil servo is actually a good one but as he alludes to you will still need to create some kind of mechanical interface that moves the unit in only one direction while the servo does its thing. That may or may no be straightforward but for most people would be easier than recompiling code.

The best suggestion I can think of is to figure out what mechanism drove this thing in the first place? Obviously a great deal of thought and design work went into its construction, clearly it also had a control mechanism as well. Whatever that mechanism was would obviously be the best solution.

Open Panzer Help / Re: Random turret sound with TCB and Benedini Mini

I'm running the 9x PWM receiver with the HK PWM to PPM converter, so probably the worst of two worlds?
Yes, ha ha, probably. When I first observed the data for an SBus receiver I was very surprised, though I suppose I shouldn't have been, at how clean the signal is. For those the only variable would be the quality of the pots on the sticks of the transmitter, but with an analog setup (PPM is still analog) there is all kinds of low-level noise in the signal introduced at multiple points in the path from your transmitter to the receiver output.

The signal from your radio is not steady and when it strays past center slightly the TCB thinks you are moving the turret so it tells the Benidini to play the turret sound.

You can try increasing the Deadband setting on your turret channel in OP Config on the Radio tab.

Are you using a PPM receiver? They are usually worse about drifting than the SBus/iBus receivers.

You can watch the drift in real time if you connect your TCB to OP Config and do the "Read Radio" routine. You'll see the channel quivering even though you aren't touching the stick.

The Taigen documentation is confusing for sure. There are apparently actually 4 different slip-ring kits, and the one with the most wires is TAG120628, which has IR and turret MG. They have another one for IR without MG which is probably what you have.

Thanks Jerry, your last description will indeed help and I think you have now boiled it down to essence of the problem. This will save me time because now I know exactly where to look, so thank you. It does seem as if driving really has nothing to do with it, but rather that after toggling the airsoft off the first time, afterwards it will not go back on again correctly.

I'm confident I can fix this when I have some time to sit down and focus and get into "programming" mode, but I might not get an opportunity for another week yet. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your troubleshooting help.

Sorry for the slow response. Jerry is right, but specifically, you can combine the following:

MG LED (and the other LEDs along the top edge of the board including AUX, L1, L2, and BRK) share a common +5v signal (listed as POS on the underside of the TCB board). These can be combined with +5v on the IR Receiver, +5v on the HIT LED, and +5v on the high intensity FLASH. Additionally if you are using a servo recoil you can also combine these with the + of the servo connector (middle pin of the three pin servo plug).

There are a few grounds that can be connected but not many since as Jerry says most of the switching is done on the negative side. But you can combine the IR Receiver negative (not the HIT LED negative) and the high intensity FLASH negative together. And if you are using a servo for recoil you can tie the servo negative to these as well.

Additionally if you are using the mechanical recoil/airsoft output you can combine its positive with the positive of the IR LED. This level is equal to battery voltage, not 5 volts, so only those two can be combined, but don't mix them with the positive 5 volts listed above.

The barrel elevation motor outputs can't be mixed with anything.

Anyway that should get you down to 12, but Jerry's point is worth remembering that the IR version of the slip-ring gives you a few extra wires.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the wire gauge on these slip-rings is extremely small, meaning it can't carry much current. This probably won't matter for lights and such but I could see it maybe being an issue with mechanical recoil/airsoft units since the motors in these are pretty much under-powered to begin with.

Additionally, any glitching can also cause problems with mechanical recoil/airsoft units because it can interfere with the brief signal these devices send back to the board to let it know the action has completed. Slip-rings by their nature can easily cause such glitches, so if your mechanical recoil doesn't work try by-passing the slip ring and see if that is the problem.

With regards to the Taigen sound card not turning off - there was indeed a bug which I was able to identify in relatively short order, since it was just introduced a few weeks ago when changes were made to the sound code for adjustments to the TBS Mini. It is very common when a change is made in one place that it has unintended consequences in another, and this was one of those times.

I've posted a TCB firmware update (0.93.03) that corrects the Taigen issue. It also includes my "fix" that I posted for you in the test version a few days ago, I actually don't think that "fix" makes any difference to anything and apparently it didn't since you are still having issues with your airsoft. But regardless you can ignore the test version from here on out.

I will delve further into the airsoft thing later when I have some more time.

It sounds like you have multiple things going on and it's not all entirely clear to me. Let us focus on a single issue at a time and ignore the others until one is resolved, and then move on to the next.

There should be never be a message about settings being "deleted." However if you import an OPZ file from an earlier version of OP Config into a later version of OP Config, your OPZ file may not have certain new settings that have been added since. OP Config may tell you that "not all settings were imported" which is fine, it just means your OPZ file doesn't know about the new settings. In this case you need to import your OPZ file to load all your old settings, then save back over the file you just imported. Now the new settings will be added to the file and you shouldn't see that message again.

Earlier we were working on a lack of synchronization between the airsoft and other effects, but which only happened after driving around. I don't doubt something is going on but I am skeptical that driving around is really the cause, so I was wondering if you could pinpoint the minimum state of things that might reproduce the issue, ie, just turn your tank on maybe with your airsoft on/off switch in different positions and see if the synchronization is missing right from the start, or see if changing the functions from on/off to toggle makes a difference, etc...

I won't have time this weekend to work on anything but maybe next week I can get back to it.

Hi Jerry, you can try this test version of firmware, I sort of doubt it will solve your problem and I haven't had time to test it, but it does fix a very minor bug related to the track recoil.

If it doesn't then I will have to try to re-produce the issue on my end which I can do later when I have more time. I do not think it is likely that driving around is actually the thing causing the issue.

Are you using the airsoft enable/disable functions, or the airsoft toggle function? (Typically that is the difference between a 2-position and 3-position switch respectively). Whichever one you are using, you might try swapping for the other function(s) to see if that changes anything.
