all good, just thought I would ask, I have ordered:

4x 2.0 mm 3 PIN PH JST Micro Connector - This will make two data cables
1x Basic Breakout Board For FTDI FT232RL USB to TTL Serial IC Adaptor 3.3V 5V FT232
1x 10 Pin Convert to 6 Pin Adapter Board For ATMEL AVRISP USBASP
1x 5V USB ISP USBASP Programmer Downloader Cable for Atmel AVR ATMega

This should be a good kit to do all my programming/firmware updates

Now back to the model while I wait for these to arrive
:)

Hi
Using my microscope goggles its not bad, at 10X I can actually see  ;)

There are a couple other components that are polarity sensitive also like the Zener diode and its hard to see the line on the cathode side, I think I got mine right  :o

Next is to try and bootload it this will tell me if all is well :)

Thanks for all the help Luke

Have you ever tried using an Arduino to program the bootloader/ I have one handy but if not I will just buy one

Hi all

ok here is todays effort, my first time reflowing and using a hot air station (although I did do a few of those practice boards before my First scout attempt and they all worked ok but they are not as complicated as this beast

Not tested yet and I still need to have a closer look at all the joints/pads, I have left out the RC pins as I don't think I will need them as I'm connecting direct to the TCB.

Looks good in Red though :)

Hi all

Just going to document my three boards that I will assemble for my Stug build.

I have a TCB from Hobby King so that I can use it as a benchmark to test the Scout and Sound boards but I will build my own TCB just because I want to, the cost of components is about the same as the HK one to buy but the three boards will all be RED and build by myself which is the main reason for doing it.

Three boards are here along with all the components from DigiKey, just need a few odd bits like the heatsinks to finish them.

Will post progress report as I go and ask for help if I get stuck.

New toys arrived today  ;D

Might start a new Topic just on my Board building experience

Sorry Luke, no Purple boards available through Seeed so I went Red to be different :)

Quick question:
I have installed a couple of RC ESC's with the OP TCB just as a prelim set up to get things tested so I know the TCB is 100% and I notice the tracks are quite fast, my experience with RC truck has taught me to use a crawler high turn motor are you guys doing the same or just using different ratio gearbox's?
I was thinking of getting better quality motors and thought if I could get high turn ones of this size (380's) then it would slow it down and give it more torque, your thoughts?

Hi all

thought I would share my first Tank project here with you all since I'm going to be using OP electronics in it.

Basics:
Heng Long Sturmgesschutz III Ausf.G Sd.Kfz.142/1 Kit #3868-1 (Infrared Version)
Open Panzer TCB (Via Hobbie King)
Open Panzer Scout ESC (building myself with PCB from Seeed/Components fron Digi-Key)
Open Panzer Sound (building myself with PCB from Seeed/Components fron Digi-Key)
Metal tracks, road wheels, new smoker and couple other detail parts from TankArmy.com (Australian supplier)

I found this Kit at a Model Display meeting near where I live and thought I would turn this toy into a Model, then I found Open Panzer ...

I haven't taken any photos of the standard model as I'm sure you have seen a grey Stug before.
I'm doing a Finnish Army version as they are a little different and I found a site with a lot of History and photos of actual tanks http://www.andreaslarka.net/
I airbrushed the Green base coat then painted the Brown and grey by hand (grey looks white but its Camo Grey best match I could get to the photos)

Actual tanks:
I am using this one for my inspiration (not an exact copy) as there are more detailed photos available for this particular one, and a full history on the tank, it racked up 9 confirmed tanks destroyed!

Progress with Paint:

Next step is the weathering process,

I will do a separate Topic for the electronics in the correct place soon as I'm still waiting for the PCB's to arrive.

Hi John

cheers, I love new projects and this reflowing has my interest, especially the fact that I am forced to do it to get the most out of Open Panzer hardware.

I have the boards being made at Seeed and the stencils being made at OSH, all components are ordered through Digi-Key and I have ordered both a hotplate and a hot air gun/pencil to get this going. Not sure I will use an oven unless I get really good at this and a few people want to buy some boards, essentially I only need one of each.

I have also ordered 3 of those practice kits from ebay so I can get my technique right prior to unleashing on my first Scout and sound board.
But yes I will post pictures as I go, I'm away for about 10 days and when I return some of my parts might be waiting for me...hopefully  ;D
