Title: Newbie with a Turnigy 9x
Post by: Lposter on November 16, 2021, 12:40:33 AM
Hello

Many thamks to the Admin for letting me post here!

Some background..... normally I dont use control boards and just connect a reciever to some ESCs and work with that. But a few years ago I bought three TCBs from Hobbyking  and never got around to using them. Now that they seem to let one use the Taigen sound cards....I thought it would be nice to try them as a cheap(er) way of getting some sound.

I have a Turnigy 9x v.2 thatis the only radio I own. Its flashed with the Er9x firmware (version .8...something I think). It has a stock module in the back of it. I normally use this with the standard recievers of which I have a lot.

Im not sure how to insert a picture so here is a link: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-9x-2-4ghz-8ch-receiver-v2.html?___store=en_us

Om guessing it uses this afdhs 2 protocol.

Connecting the TCB to OP on my PC works fine and I flashed the firmware as per instructions.

Connecting the reciever to the TCB (top or bottom pins) does not allow the radio to be recognised (followed correct binding procedure and everything).

On the wiki I see that the radio is listed as recommended and while there is some talk of teh standard "IA8" reciever being "PPM compatible" it doesnt actually say if the reciever will work or not?

The standard reciever is not listed on teh reciever section of the Wiki.

So I ordered some of these:  FS-iA6B  and    Flysky 2.4G 10CH FS-iA10B Receiver PPM Output With iBus Port

My question(s) is/are:

1. Will those recievers work with my radio?
2. Will this radio and those recievers (Assuming they work) bot work with the TCB?
3. Should the standard recievers be working with the TCB?

Apologies for teh roundabout way of getting to the point but I am not much of an expert with either radios or recievers or control boards for that matter......

But I am eager to try out these TCB boards as maybe they are better than just connecting ESCs to recievers in a crude setup.

Thanks in advance!

P

Hi P, and welcome to the forum. Over the years there have been quite a few versions of the Turnigy 9x sold. The iA8 receiver will certainly work with the TCB, but it looks like yours came with the 9x8c v2 receiver. It does not have PPM or iBus so to answer your third question, I am not surprised it did not work. HobbyKing has been selling the 9x with the iA8 receiver for some time but it seems you got an older version with a different receiver.

However both the iA6B and the iA10B will also work with the TCB, I have used them both myself. The only question remains whether they will bind with your transmitter, but if your transmitter is AFHDS-2A I think they should. If your transmitter is just AFHDS 2 (not 2A) then it won't work. It's too bad there have been so many versions of the 9x and I know it is confusing.

If they do not bind to your transmitter you could get a different module for the transmitter, but let's see what happens. Let us know what you find out!

Hi ho

Many thanks for the info! Is it possible to find out whether the Tx is AFHDS-2 or 2A? Written somewhere inside?

Well if it is written anywhere it would probably be on the front around the screen or on the back on the module. It might also be written on the 9x8c v2 receiver itself, but I can't tell from the photo. Hobby King says the 9x8c v2 receiver is AFHDS-2A but Hobby King is not always correct with their descriptions.

I opened it up a bit to look inside the back module and all thats written there on the board is HF-0200 V1.0 and I cant find that online.

I will strip it later and see if the mainboard has anything written on it.

What a hassle..... I must have 15 of those recievers a d am very used to the radio. Dont fancy changing them all....

Thanks for the help!
