Title: Tamiya Gepard(Cheetah) SPAAG
Post by: johnnyvd on September 18, 2018, 09:54:47 AM
Time for another project that has been sitting too long under my workbench..
It started all when i wanted to buy a Tamiya Gepard for a colleague of mine..

Before i knew it the seller asked me to build a full option model for him..!

The Tamiya Gepard is known as the Cheetah PRTL in the Netherlands and the owners served on one of these when he was in the army..
Here a picture of one of the models and it's box:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2jofT-Lz92XPR7jgkk4zSkqQWfTGAhhvE3jrnuIsMkkw5kle5L9RzARUWOV4EPF42Z7hpEImu0WrMRv6lO6ghn7jVkFeN3N0VymmVOtPcJPs7OdtNS0MLx_XPmozgcVK-AdZHecflz7Cgy_VLbmry62guQDrAtM8WAag7MgG0j9v3G04LD_qp8ssBYqEitwXCmmTbkq37siz4QCCDDkXGYOvYD-g4e7ibxoU4E83LyFo7JOqXuWDfLJvXFEaQYY74kDHvHTMTBeNdd2LufKYhXItPMnVF7QBJLUnx1Ftxc7bn-vJ1Env1O4gbO3LHYUZQ-fVJFt6v2oTkNOErDOlZ78lIo7FIJrs_ZWwBtCaArb2o-QW3zbusJM2ncRi0YCKwASfAVQGqJqa8iwVuaj_5TUeJlbvxrUhEnhAS7oimer30u5hTMYnI0NXO1ZErmFtloKVGcgpuM-g2MjV4e60m3_Qo-3qH9i90AwNh_HXqUWV3yjPeIXTug1d7MGhVbau4bzXFYQqlGsKaiy3A1zCId-TpINlinpNbxCAJ0bvAy9QId-tTqWZLRzZm-3EtaCQQvVtUjetcusstL3TQa6lUi1z7apfUHBBjrZoDxYGUTiXKAgwlsdr6EstIrnczh5F9WxBrWtiJpyrWWeHiupDyPs2eDla7_7Do7WZY0I_6cfIMkZkWOs0KjaqMw=w1258-h944-no)

And the model itselves:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/81-XpnDo8DUq7xMzFb9zcLJMIK1AhjP7cEHQxaIgequWrJAVjhNKMoT1WjnnFEG9lNa0x3Rfau74VnZx1_r7WkeTiuksNOOpP_iSHnhjrfnnIKVn4q5vz9T9gDnXi9rIeqbGQDUFPy8lg73doXGR7MaT90Pe5K9LjHLhU61TtVgHEmR5ihr4VG5d2lH22XRFMHywXT_0Fr5vsIATeK8nov3LV8xitFbUIC_R_J0WmAlnvo910XbsPGcUWCPOgmYgau0uCQTVcdpsSl9pv1hpBPvwb_0bhwugomaVf3Ov5q-JB4qOZy8E9XS6D83M-Itc5IVX60TXMGXFGNYtgEJMG3Qoy9DY9UKj936fnY69ZeX5nRlI6-DXzC_z2Kjye7E3noSrD_j4Q8OxQDhXfqUVygG-YqnsFs8r0CC6XgwUFsrvAZYOSBQuK9Gvf6FlTeRZNIk3oI2W7HepYxcruxHra8nt-ei-ULv4H79mtBT_iqaQ0spXh0GWPuNgDnbX7wlXyr-TvFq4kN_pwFrImsVYytmUZAUPj4I44Z5iWtBPNhOqJ0rXHp4nJBGVOScFbA8f2jmq6_mavxoMABIPiZ7ST8Ke_TEKSmcuXTaCII0GkkFBICtP-WHF-7qqbhm8mnN5PhrnkJm8IoIbyMelcglMzGTIUJ3NP-nn0vMt-7CqgkJjcmUoM7zuogVb0g=w1258-h944-no)

This is going to be quite some conversion as we have a lot of stuff that has to move controlled by the Openpanzer! Think about:

- Folding the rear radar up and down
- Start rotating the rear radar
- Let the front radar follow the turret
- Driving, shooting, etc. etc.

For the observant reader, i said "one of the models" because i could not resist buying three of them for myselves...  :o

First off was ditching the original drive units. These Gepards are vintage stuff and they all have the Tamiya single motor drives with clutch mechanism in them.
I used some torro 5:1 low profile gearboxes that fit very nicely.

I made a 3D printed adapter plate that fits the lower tub of the Gepard, again this will be available for download after the project is finished!
Based on my previous 3D designs i now have a general layout for the acoustic smoker, TCB and i placed the Scout PCB and Opensound PCB in a possible location.

Very nice, I like your idea using Taigen gearbox with Tamiya tanks.
Have Gepard  sprockets fit perfectly with Taigen 5:1 gearbox drive shafts?

Yet another very unique build. This will certainly test the limits of the TCB's functionality, but then again, this is precisely the unusual case it was designed to work with. I will be interested to see what you come up with.

This looks like a challenging build, I will be following with great interest :)

So, a little progress on the Gepard.. I started with some small details: the rear radar.
It should be able to rotate on demand and lifted up and down with a servo.

Space is very limited to fit a drive unit, and cost should be not too excessive. So i chose a miniature Geared motor that is easily available from Aliexpress:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OBPtzzhapbxIHgk90g-l6nEfsgfR_Vr0w1uACrUmK3Ak3zuqmyVtdZ3ZEWv5swXOlG_wk7w9ElE3h9BW0i0wWAoX5Auy0abMGlFIa9ynJwEU1fKFDrMEXqx9S8kRhrZ-WrDz51tC56NbrpobnHs2bn7o-nF0dqivCB1LEECgqZ41zvL9xnNgpyk3bQLIbvRpqZ8sSG4DyIwS2q40-N56w30MopkG3jSt6TsTJa6UfEYHCMakt8lnsJSWwp5Q4nx9ij5rRAY8ns1y2UwlqIcHYGIAtS9bb0ct2zUOHKu2r1HivBAPPPil4itBg5JuBWrSQA01SIf0Zs4CE0O2QbslJ8-JfhXd_XGF1aNYmb8lTdh1B1xBRF7TyEOMFZ0hjxX3NAxITIn7ktu0EctmNfi2b1J8cnp1x9MT65AphgDZTCUSQHDStdzwgz-xvIW1u0JQ_MySh-LHhYvziuFPhzUAneCB6xuXKVYLuo42iMUcJpgMuR9D-MeBWuAZPttoWFSIaWGpE-254mDbOSp5Rb36eezknYPOBPU6j5c-M6SYCybmtq9tM_PT15GSIAKO7B1st0fh2nC3oCjd0DcTAjwwmqUkOPL6H8DGd_F3f0Ji65HWGpnZtEZJ-sBlfA_8r6_70Z7nFk3UE33dKNLB-nV3Z7ebNy34MRFFR63p3uH5NsysJ6WT02etZIiCkQ=w1251-h938-no)

The original mounting of the radar is completely opened up (easily done by drilling and an exacto knife) and i decided to enlarge the lower part of the mounting by 3D printing a tight fitting part to mount the drive:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1luoySKOIswuv4Cl-Wp7vysg8Cu8Un5dMsU7nzefoeXOABtHRHgSbv__dUdOLmvj9HRQPKTJufD1eIh1F4YlXBOWpCLNPn-ZEhotyl0-uZKRuMPwYjFOuiMkVUgsY-0CslW1aAnuLjvfpYWBkKlOkafKw5Ajn1quzNUN4Ng19TaFNHrb8yb1ZKAB2EIn_UK9zbzFaEGxhGDKnEeIgfSS7gfFxlnmm6TffX5nhozIXzu9ZBWsNrBRplnXzQRRuyOpuZeHSTMG2YwofnI3EnHV9fePuxiD8WSqehCaCn0siHcymls_Pomt5CE9gkTN2nkNHLpO207R1Pivagot32qKU_pCcuv1MFpWcGiyH45TzQ-HkczwB2tt_9Rlw_6YNcRNXoB0-hms8wLRIsHTvR7FVp6dsOLh-G-zJF-OTnZQAgaWQF_Eo5briV-G9o8o4aiwV5uKNA67SQQlyvS-JHLgALXdCcLD3jghWCSLfQI4C34_rLHmLq9lKJIsrx2aJhjtWPrGDyIWyF5oVNr_bLo-Yeh8bhrCerkpjAmDoeEUIhhHKrT4E1_0Vk5RsA54D94FUtBpgzWtNhBkj5Z20CZKrkXFW6e9Zow68hzsIOj83t9Gy-i7JLX9tbecLycDfoPC7SUWrm5ZU5XZJbidvpjWedQhSjdNHjRsbuT_QIaByYiRHbIRMNKzPU2jHQ=w1251-h938-no)

And everything fitted snug and tight:

I will later design a mount in the big rear hatch of the Gepard Turret that wil fit the servo and a geared "transmission" to move the radar up and down.
But first on to the......

Front radar.. Even more challenging i think.. To fit the micro servo i head to open up the complete radar.
Printed a mount inside the radar, it took some passes to get the fitment just right:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7hGPDDHy4xmHxsKIJybTOkmndlrkkMcCl8zhbVUMWXJqnEUaQaFG1Mz2Noz4C0JsPEmT65_KBDzi8WxLA_jtQzjUlsgIQCaPyFQ1yJD6nzkUUDWbzo9ee8PkOOY_Ag5fKj1Ghy5A05e7xA-6VWxSqkxpx2lHeq_m5-qkb_mjK2Cu3ZbdPITy_1RJz1oqR7MQdCw5FokjhsH2Cs3T4Cz_hF4YL9hJJdv1sYn3L43ReQ6B-v49hIWD88zF89ihBozQwtGC2L9ovNRfWycjiitr2bJ9KblUyHXU5Vys2m_9oKZ6cWjPim8nWcOQyJ-IaG91P-I4BQZP2GCl1DOxuAwsLl0KQSFzSsaNUBIDBLjINsHqr23WuIZyFFmVhGQjx8kX-g8sFLOfu0GSQnLfPoGhSeoKxYy8-BgBm1E_bSsXr_2NJ3a3YFnm25YxUdI0BSoUrrsm8m-YvACR6ybJSKHLWHy9CPsG2BWw-3kNvJ0nML7FZPxkO9Qm7gcHLdzf62T2YH4ICDI5R68hbtPDUXBCZqrROqLX5AuaElwqTntyH2eGkIJSlreTgwXbF5EZXQVQ8SyjxCYakggvws8ZsJjcV_zLfbK1IwhfU9sn_Qjz_wN_Q9Tt1uEjaCLYXTqcqrcg898TbGjOf9Nkpul8MiZhg7N_UqxI3Lj-XBTG_b0vcuSVpMPhWWpaBSEUuQ=w1251-h938-no)

Hard to see with the black and lacking contrast, but the servo is mounted inside of the 3D block and this fits the inside of the radar perfectly:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pVqBErjs5AedqSB4Hjpf6nUYPeHQvNGTasuwENoEzktEAqcecNg7-7lQi3ZcSviOpRSvA0XlNe5mDgjlWcJDr7OFdJ2xpy-bqWASJAIi4-Bcbd8T5XlBvl66nTDptrK7I8nW3a1B12SNAZgiRKFv28HMPtg4PixpyIMPsIOAu59yJ_GDw-YWltQtnGBcJA1MgKOVDWBv-xXeJp6Eo0BJPa-PLTdYNSYVtmhNyVCY_WZQnI0wTRn6SY9ibePHkXs_gi4SKOe7JY3-FrBuL2Bd_tWxBdzLw1coWQXaEFlML9fCoDVgWYTOLtQFT5JwAjpP2FKfQWdEvTG-8zVlnPF0miewqXj8iZ26MgF0738RJcXe5YCT8x5iHafgObMPXDoqaVhXNVOOP3s0ULtmD2lTBOpf5I4b8s4KZlJvrejkrhPP40pz_9K-J_IdD3Xlnmaiy8AajnLlYdDYiGvKVV3nzFFIVfyFFwG79ZtL8HCXsxLVGtm3uY8dkXklDo1jbCAmZXQtBqw955V5mxJgOg9B34Ys_1ksh83i12ysNYEdhg-FjjKD4SOgzQTgdq8QJFzB_1aPo2Yw7ECuxnT54IvdnxRXOF3t0QaunaN0Vw0dMFsyXpxYQtORwXqGDHGgH7FRXlWQDHf5qqXG26MmiuqUP-R-gx7qFWaOYNyQ7UDbakvwysZZFlHklQAKmQ=w1251-h938-no)

And now with some tuning up and down movement works like a charm! It will follow the gun elevation.

Next up is the rotational movement of the (front)radar it will be following the movement (pan)of the Turret rotation

Gepard is one of my favorite models.  Nice work with the 3D.   See if you can build a cool  vibration system and LED lighting to go with it...maybe a off weighted high rpm motor....

Thanks for the input!

Dunno about how much the Oerlikon's recoiled. My colleague that served on the Cheetah told me to compare it with a "tank with two Browning .50 cal strapped to the sides" said the practically had no recoil.. They did  put out a lot of smoke like is shown in the video's you posted.. In fact i am now pondering about the seperate loudspeaker and acoustic smoker in the turret.... This would get very complicated...

And a little progress this week.. I did not have that much time, but i managed to design the Rear radar construction..

After printing it it toke some iterations and tweaking, but it now fits great on all four turrets!

The picture above shows the design just prior to the final one.. On the 3D picture you can see the difference.. Brackets to mount it in the big rear hatch are added..

Very nice, I like your idea using Taigen gearbox with Tamiya tanks.
Have Gepard  sprockets fit perfectly with Taigen 5:1 gearbox drive shafts?

The Taigen gearboxes have only one flat side on the shaft while Tamiya Sprockets have two..
I milled a flat side and the shaft diameter is the same and fits perfectly!

So, a larger update on the front radar servo drive. This was a difficult one to get right. I started of a little bit like the AFV unit.
But i ditched the intermediate gear because i don't want the front radar to rotate 360 degrees, just want it to follow turret movement (panning).

Then there was the thing with getting the base frame to fit the slope of the turret bottom. Had to recreate the bottom in 3D and do a number of printing iterations to get it right.
Here the result in the design:

After a lot of tweaking on the gears, i managed to get it to run and fit right!

The servo kabel of the front radar up/down movement fits through the bearing center and under the base frame..

Now on to routing the servo cable in the front cable and to think about the design of the barrel elevation!

Some progress on the turret rotation drive. At first i planned on using a custom designed turret ring based on the Tamiya leopard 2A6 which has two ball bearing "rings" running in a large outer ball race.. I managed to 3D print it and  it worked, but the accuracy was too much off to let it run smoothly..

So back to the drawing board and this time i designed a turret ring based on a standard ball bearing 40mm inside diameter.
I want it to work with a standard Henglong turret drive so i made the turret gear as small as possible, 55t m=1 to be precise. This is the result of this ordeal:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/hBdsQY7Gg2bUjLVTA_-ZZ4mxUohlFGF-1V3OOG-OP0mfMea52R_9HZTSBg6YByVSzNzsiy99kCpwtO4I1Epp4KVEOzKgKLKiYV8_EH587-LiAMnn9hY2MbtFO3fCRLx0vR95wveNLc9MaNX_r6tfhYIvm4Xsel51IRC_dpoaRoUr0h_o8SNVCcAoX-1RbF86fccvgwEJCVmPp_JFkfWhI5ccAEpppJbFRmuAhQfpF3MbgJQZWKQTNRAZ5BrwaCrK-HzJF7U9Tsd9SDUxc_uteTqk7L3yFRVjhWLOZittYu9DcIaCtbRXMMDyVQKa1wDuNHW91izQ_5lWvy1CAZzf-OnWpRMgrAcezw-tYjVMkWo-ZlJk2PQ5UiedUp0gjX57ydcVFRzPdBqq29Tyi4TGKR0UUN1LoRZtYCOT-QBEzJ20TXqgJuZLJeAXEdiR0RIuqmcIE5LtHhDkTZmTumRQNQ5_kbyJD6mZcs_kVbsyfs6dI5twJS7oKcEGHAcG8myLDCh4UWgpJfwa0Ljh9ePmMYaDMySB_m9j2ibSxEdVXIJsx9_09RiZhaMhtidpHdMRzmAUgYU6SlTQG0CflMCfus001ir9NnHSLU7GwOEKeldEI-UKfvbF5_bIfLQCYTJV74mr2D2tQggNxmtG5rRGzQg48KB80lmJqeQ4wOotKINeGDNgqBhhuSykOQ=w919-h689-no)

Also visible is the interface for the turret bottom to form some sort of "Spindle shaft". This will be the backbone of the turret rotation.. Here also a view on the mounted Turret gear:

Clamped between the Gear and the spindle is a 24-strand slipring to get all the signals from the hull to the turret!

The rotation of the turret now works like a dream! I got really inspired by these ball bearings, so i decided to use some of them on the barrel elevation unit also!

Next up (and almost finished) is the barrel elevation servo drive. This one will use gears instead of the normal servo arms..

Thank you! Currently i'm working on a way to get easy access to the turret internals.
The top of it should come on off very easy.. I'm thinking about a solution with some Neodium magnets...

The complete project is put in the fridge for a while.. Too much work on other Openpanzer controlled Tanks for customers.
I will start posting when i have time available again!

Cheers, John

Sorry all for the big delay. Due to a lot of work on my house and a new demanding job the Gepard project was put on hold for some time. I hope i will be finding the time to restart it this year. When i do, i will be posting progress and the 3D files!
